I'm planning to go camping this weekend.  I'm taking 3 children - youngest is nearly 2 years old.  I'm planning on using a 1 - 2 kw oscillating heater and keeping it on all night.  Is this a bad idea?!?!

We use a fan heater but it depends on the site's supply and the type of heater you're planning to use.

We have a Khyam Ontario 8 and a small fan heater with variable thermostat, frost protection and safety cut out.
We find we only need to use the 1kw setting and have the heat set at about half.
This is more than enough to heat the tent and at the beginning and end of the season (March and October) we have been known to leave it on all night - the heater then trips on and off throughout the night as necessary.

Plenty of layers and blankets, insulating the airbeds/SIMs and good quality sleeping bags will keep you all warm much better than trying to heat the whole tent.

Happy camping - enjoy your trip away.

You should be fine.  I'd rather use it for heating before going to bed & rely on good insulation (warm PJs sleeping bag, foam mat etc.) Your tent will not hold any heat in but the fan heater will help.  We use ours through the night on occasion.  Just make sure nothing can fall on it or is directly in  its way that could melt or burn.

If you're planning on leaving it on trough the night, definately go with electric and not gas heaters. Gas ones need ventialtion due to the carbon monixide & dioxide they give off and can increase condensation in modern tents.

Obviously with kids be aware they might be moving around in the night so halogen with with the auto-switch off is best especially if you have a sewn-in groundsheet and don't want to have to pay for repairs to it.

Frankly I think a halogen heater in a tent is pretty useless, it doesn't heat the air. If it gets knocked over it won't have cooled enough to prevent damage to groundsheet. You need a fan heater or a radiator type.

Thanks for that. Does it make a difference if it's oscillating or static fan heater?
