we got a good sized lamp from yeomans last year cost about £8 and we ran it on citronella oil,and we loved it
They run for hours on very little oil,and keep midges away...
hope this helps..

I thought about using citronella oil in mine (kill two birds with one stone and all that) but doesn't it blacken the glass? I thought you needed paraffin oil to burn cleanly.
Ive used citronella oil in my lamps for the last few years, it's a very refined paraffin and it doesn't blacken your glass. That happens when you turn the wick up too far.

I've got some Citronella oil already for some burners we have so i'll give it a go in the hurricane lamp then . I've not been able to get hold of any paraffin oil yet, everywhere i've tried said they don't get it in until they start stocking the summer stuff

Have you tried B&Q, the ones near me have it all year round. Seem to have it mostly in the winter.

Hubby tried there a few weeks back, also tried our local hardware shop where you can normally buy anything and everything, plus several garden centres. They all said it's something they get in with summer stock, bbq's etc, i've seen citronella oil all over though and we already have some so will give that a go
I've had a play today and it burns lovely, and as said with the flame turned down no black smoke.
What I used was citronella lamp oil, mine was from Morrisons last year £2.50 for a 1L bottle. But they sell it all over, usually found with the garden stuff.
