we recomissioned out little Thetford 345 last year and it was very useful having young kids and all
before it went away for the winter it was given a good clean and flush through with a top up of fresh Thetford pink and green fluids in the right places/proportions
pulled it out over the weekend and the flush water is black with mould ! no smells but pretty unpleasant and a little concerning
am wondering if the pink/green stuff has a shelf life, either un mixed or once diluted ? Cant see anything on the bottles
I use the green stuff and I'm sure it looses its potency.
We had a half bottle left open at start of last year and it didn't work anywhere near as effectively as it had done when our season ended previous year. Soon as I started a new bottle everything seemed fine again.
I think they might go off cause they smell strong when you pour them at first and, during the season ive noticed the pink stuff has lost its smell.
I get the same as Eldorado at the start of the season, black stuff for a good few flushes, you would have thought when you drained the tank the chemical would leave an anti fungus prohibatator behind..

It don't go off in the bottles but you should flush out & leave toilet empty when you are not using it over winter.
That is news to me, I have never done this in 19 years, my toilet is always charged with chemicals as soon as I empty it and it has never been a problem, the chemicals work just as well after having been left in the cassette for 3 moths as they do for 3 hours and they do no damage to the cassette if left in place.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
hi. i worked in the sewage industry. i say only tip out the waste ,never wash it out.i never use any of the chemicals . maybe if it gets very hot ,over 35c i put a bit of biologial clothes washing liquid in the waste part.i have had the same thetford for 10years.empty it when i get home wash the outside .but leave the inside to breed bacteria. bacteria is what you need not chemicals. speak to your local sewage plant operators ,bacteria bacteria.

That is news to me,
The op refers to a Portapotti not a caravan cassette toilet. Plainly the contents as described by op have 'gone off' presumably because they were not in a sealed(airtight)container.
I would have thought best practise when storing a Portapotti over winter would be to empty, flush out & apply some silicone lubricant to rubber parts. Thats always worked for me.
the "green" versions probably do because they use ineffectual "natural" ingredients ,my 20 year old can of elsan fluid i use is fine and just as powerful
nearly gone though so my new version without formaldehyde and probably rubbish version will have to be used
i will miss the streaming eyes on really hot days
thanks DOZY, made me chuckle. And thanks everyone else for their thoughts too
To clarify, we have been using only Thetford chemicals. It is normally stored in the garage over winter but we had 2ft snow and all manner of disruption last year so bought it in in case we needed it - it spent 5 months in a centrally heated room unused
Thetford have told me in winter to remove all water to prevent risk of freezing damage. To winterize (whatever that means) to add propylene glycol anti freeze to the fresh water tank.
Next year I will empty it out (but not flush it clean) and put some diluted antifreeze in, but my understanding is that antifreeze can damage plastics ?
This year we need new chemicals so I need to figure if we stick with Thetford or go Organic Elsan
I just buy the cheapest blue, my local caravan shop does own brand, a fraction of Thetford price & use plain water in flush tank. I think it is even possible to use cheap supermkt brand biological washing liquid instead of the blue.
we have just last week started to use the thetford stuff after finishing off a bottle of Elsan blue that had been lurking in our garage since we last owned a caravan around 10 years ago!
No way had the elsan stuff gone off, it worked a darn site better than the thetford rubbish that seemed quite diluted by comparison. the Elsan blue broke all loo roll down to a pourable mush, but not the thetford stuff which just left it sloshing around in the tank, and me heading off to the nearest caravan accesory shop to buy more Elsan Blue!

I've bought a bottle of Thetford Green today and it has a best before date stamped on. It is 2014 which is a way off and it says that it may not be as effective after this date.
