New to caravanning. Have a flat screen tv for the van and a round white tv aerial on roof of caravan. (Not satelite or anything like that)

1/ What lead do I need to connect it up in the van, and where might I buy one?

2/ Some sites have an aerial socket on the electric hook up posts. What sort of lead would I need for this? How long does it need to be & where might I buy one?

Many thanks for any help.

The Status aerial on the roof should be connected to a small white power supply, usually inside the wardrobe or cupboard close to where the aerial is.

The output of this is then connected to an aerial socket in the living area of the van, usually with an integral 12v output in the same plate. A standard male to male aerial flylead will suffice between this aerial plate and your TV (available from any decent electrical store, B&Q etc).

The white device in cupboard will have an on/off switch (powered from 12v) and you'd normally switch this to 'on' as it powers the Status aerial on the roof, however there are many folk who are disatisfied with the performance of this type of aerial, so you may unhappy with result (depends on location, signal strength etc).

The aerial outputs on EHU posts are usually standard TV aerial sockets, so a standard male to male aerial cable would be used between post and TV. Assuming you have no external TV aerial connection on the van, the easiest option for first use would be to pass this cable thru a window to check. Length of cable will vary between sites; I carry two, x1 at 5m, x1 at 10m (to save using a long cable for short run and getting tangled).

Either way, your TV will need to be fully re-tuned for the site your on (I'm assuming it has integrated Freeview/digital).

PS: What year is the van Pam, do you have user manual for it?

Paul - brilliant reply. Thank you.
Can I check Ive got this right:
So I will need a short male to male lead for the connection to the inside white box in the cupboard.... and a longer male to male lead of say 10 mtrs if I want to connect to the socket on the post outside the van?
On every site I will need to re tune my tv.
When I connect to a post outside I plug other end straight into tv and not into the box in cupboard.

Yes the tv has integrated Freeview / digital /hd ready. Just bought a couple of weeks ago from Tesco. No aerial lead with it at all though.

The van is a 2007 model Bailey Ranger.

Campinkev. Thank you for that info. Does that have a male to male connection? Looks ideal. Could I use this inside the van (for the connection to the socket in the cupboard?) and also use it for the outside connection to post? Does it have to be unrolled completely before use or can it be used partly wound up?

Nearly right. The white power supply box should have the vans aerial already connected, then a 2nd cable already fitted that feeds the aerial socket in the living area (see 2nd photo). Assuming all is intact and working, you only need a short'ish male-to-male lead from TV to the aerial plate.

With regards to using the point on the EHU, this is generally a communal TV connection and you simply need a cable between this and direct to your TV. The reel that Kev's highlighted is a TV cable on a roll, so this would be ok from EHU post to inside of van, then use the short male-to-male flylead from reel to TV. You should normally be ok leaving the reel partly wound. You wouldn't connect anything else to the box in the cupboard.

TV would need a full retune for every site as stations are transmitted differently between broadcast locations.

If you find you use on-site aerial points frequently (or choose to get an external TV aerial on a pole set-up), then you'd find it useful to get an external TV aerial point fitted to the van which would save trailing cables thru open windows.

If you've not already got one, the Bailey manual for your van can be found on my links page, here. TV aerial is covered in section 4.24, page 4-59.

Thanks so much Paul. I have copied all that info including the photos and printed it out. Will take it to the van with me on Friday and see what I can sort out.

I am also towing for the first time on Friday so only going to a site 6 miles away. Next week Im on a towing course at Henfield before I tow to the New Forest the following day. Exciting but scarey stuff!

Your links page is amazing & very helpful by the way. Ive fitted (with help) an Al-Ko 3004 to my van last week & have a Sunncamp Ultima porch awning just like you have in the link hopefully arriving tomorrow.

Thanks again for your help.

No problem Pam, hope all goes well and enjoy your break. I recall you from the AKS3004 fitting thread, you're obviously very capable.
Thanks for the comment ref links page; it's very much in it's infancy and I just thought it might prove helpful to archive documents of common interest.

Final thing (although I have already mentioned it) there can be poor results with the Status aerial you have on the roof, so please don't get too wound up if it doesn't seem to work where you go. Personally, I find very little bother with mine (luck with reception on site more than anything) but if you have an aerial point on the EHU, then you should be fine.

Enjoy!

Will keep that in mind Paul. Ive never used a tv much while away in the past.... mind you it was a 6 inch screen black & white tv (free gift) with a little stick aerial. I used to have an Autocruise Valentine motorhome.

If the new tv doesnt work because reception is poor it wont be too much of a problem. I will try & get a long tv aerial cable though in case they have sockets on the posts.

Looking forward to getting to the site but not the towing there. Maybe I'll be more confidant after the towing course though. Will let you know.
