After some high winds last year, we've got a split along the length of one of our poles (middle pole in a tunnel tent) - have bought a replacement but have no idea how to go about replacing it? Worried that if I undo the elastic, I won't be able to feed it back through - was considering using electrical tape to patch up the split one and take the spare in case of disaster ? Has anyone else found a way of undoing and rethreading the elastic or used strong electrical tape as a substitute?

Tape might temporarily repair a split at the ends of a pole, but one split along its length really needs replacing, possibly by a camping shop if you're not confident of doing it yourself after reading this thread and its links.

What you do is , the cord will be knotted at the end and covered in glue. Get a screw driver and dig the knot out the cut the knot off. Then take of the poles until you get to the broken one. Now take some tape and thin wire. Tape the cord to the wire(wire at least as long as the pole) and pull through . Carry on till you have thread all the poles. Now the cord is elastic so pull through and make two knots , one on top of the other then pour some glue down and hay- presto Job done...........

Genius ! I hadn't thought of the wire ..... thank you. The man in the camping shop wasn't very forthcoming when I asked him how to replace it - he just said it would push through but I had my doubts.

The elastic is only there to keep all the poles together and make them easier to put together - you don't actually need it.

In many cases, it is possible to drop or push the cord through. If you're not using a new length of cord, trim off neatly the end which was been tied, and feed it through from the non-ferruled end of the pole section (so check which way this is before dismantling).
After the first few sections, you'll need to tension the cord so that you have enough length for the remaining ones, and hold it either by wrapping it figure-of-eight wise round your first two fingers, or (if fingers should turn blue!) using some type of small clamp.

I would imagine the easiest way is to go to your local fishing tackle shop, they sell wire pole threaders to a;;ow fishermen to rethread fishing poles, So all you have to do is to knot it one end. feed it through with the threader, tesion it and thread it the other end, it should be quite easy this way,
Good luck, Steve
