This is a handy topic! I've been thinking about buying a windbreak to go around the front of our tent. I was going to buy one that matches our tent, but wont bother after reading this! Thanks for the tips and advice x

Yes the stripy beach ones are best - I've got 2 - until the wooden poles break or splinter.
One thing in favour of the nylon ones [apart from matching your tent] is that they often have windows in them for the nosey parkers amongst us ;).
It's true you have to watch out for the guy ropes ....... but then the same could be said of your tent!

Love my cheapy one that we got from Aldi or Lidl (can't remember which!) 2 years ago.
Really big and has a roof which is ideal for cooking under.
Only down side is it rustles like a carrier bag in the wind!

I also have Blue Diamond one which is gorgeous but quite big and heavy.

I have recently bought 2 of these off eBay which I love!!

(If you see my image gallery you will understand why I like them!!)

HEJC72 - I've been looking at those windbreaks - I love anything Cath Kidston-esque!!! What are they like? The only thing that worries me slightly is the durability of the fabric, but love the bright colours!!!!!!!

Fabric seems to be OK as it is waterproof nylon material - I would expect to get 2-3 seasons out of them.

I didn't really need them but I just loved the flowery pattern!

We have the cheap stripey ones and they are great.   We did have along 10 pole one, but this was awkward to position, so we got a couple more 4/5 pole ones instead and these are far more flexible

Hi,
We have the Outwell windbreaks, I know that they get mixed reviews but I think it all comes down to how you pitch them. If you put em up right they are great. Ours do match our tent ( see my gallery ) and have strong poles. We had wooden pole breaks up until a few years ago when some awful storms in bude snapped all 15 poles off like carrots along with the majority of the frame poles in our old vango Diablo 900.
After then it's steel pole tents and windbreaks all the way - had no upsets since.
You get what you pay for in my opinion.

The outwell or gelert ones pack down smaller than wooden poled windbreak. The windbreak has stayed put in heavy winds but need care positioning guys so have clear walk in and out and does not limit space inside- possible with a bit of planning, had to stick spikes into poles though as when taking down lost a couple in soil until fixed problem when back home. no problem with rustling.

Got to be old fashioned ones but with these for putting them in http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/redirect.asp?redir=http://www.towsure.com/product/Windbreak_Ground_Tube_Spiral_Thread

can screw them in with a drill then drop windbreak poles into them.

We know quite a few people who have had the new gen windbreaks with the metal poles and guy ropes, note the 'had' bit!

Old school one's all the way, much stronger in the wind as many have already stated.
