We've got an assortment of lights and lamps...a rechargeable electric one that's quite large and has 3 settings - full, half or just a tiny led light whichwe thought would be good for our 4 yr old at night time as he doesn't like sleeping in the dark; various UFOs, a gas lantern, a battery operated remote control lamp and 2 clip on electric plug in ones from Wilkos that you put a normal light bulb in - to use in the porch as we'll be cooking in there.

I use an ordinary little table or bedside lamp complete with an energy saving bulb in the living area. Cost £4 from Homebase. I find this gives a nice subdued light which is plenty for reading and doing things in the tent without being too bright.
I also use a 4 x 'D' cell battery lantern for the bedroom pod. This is the type which has a bright and dim switch although the bright is quite dim and the dim is very dim. I use it just for getting into bed after the main light in the living area has been switched off.
I also keep a little led torch to hand in case I need to get out in the night and for generally walking around after dark.
2 table lamps and have just wired up a central one! 7m of cord, a inline switch, lamp holder and old plug (cost about £4 for materials from wilkinsons!)

We still use the battery operated "UFO" Leds even when using a EHU as they are nice and safe you can move them around and the batteries last for ages
------------- Experience enables you to recognize a mistake when you make it again.
Everything has been said before, but since nobody ever listens we have to keep going back and saying it all over again and again and again
I thought I'd be really clever and take along my normal torches and ufo lights along with the battery charger, and then managed somehow to break my ufo light while trying to change the batteries. Grrrr.
I might just go for one of those plug ones and good idea to rewire it longer. Though Val's of course just looks amazing and I'm highly jealous!!

2011 So far...

Chy Carne July/Aug 2011...
I've made up a lead with an in-line switch and a pendant-type fitting from Wilko. I use an 8w spiral type energy efficient bulb. It's VERY bright (our Vermont stands out a mile at night time), and runs for ages off an inverter an leisure battery.
I use a work lamp with a hook, got 3 of various designs, the one I normallu use is not IP rated so it can't be used outside. However, it does have a switch which is very handy.
The other two are IP rates, and I have been known to hang one outside the tent when I was having a party.

Thanks for the ideas n lets hope this works as we have a large high tent so need something bit brighter than the UFO style light we had.
