Just got back from a weekend camping in the lakes, however the temperature really dropped at night...

What do you recommend to keep our 3 month old warm? We had her in a 2.5tog sleeping bag, with a couple of blankets, but her arms and hands were freezing...

Thanks for any help, really dont want her to catch a cold....

how about a fleecy babygrow and maybe some scratch mitts on her hands?
My bedroom in my old house was absolutely freezing in winter and i was worried about her getting cold so i used the mitts at night

If we camped when it was that cold when ours were little I used to get the kids to wear a small hat and mittens to bed and make sure whatever top they wore was long sleeved, this along with the few blankets meant they stayed toasty x

we found fleecy blankets tended to be too warm for some reason, and no idea why gro-bags had no arms but longsleeve sleepsuits, Little Lfe Arc and cell blankets can work well - depends if you have a "wriggler"

The website is gone. Just a parking page for the domain name now. They will be too big for a 3 month old though.

Please dont be offended, but I think 3 months is far too young to be taking a baby camping - no matter how many layers you are using. I dont think a tent is the correct environment for a baby that young. You have extreme cold at night then extreme heat in the day due to the material of the tent. Some tents are like ovens in the morning, and if a baby is wrapped up in numerous layers wouldnt the extreme heat be dangerous?   We've 3 kids and ours didnt start camping with us till they were at least a year old. Sorry I just wouldnt take the risk.

I have to add though that my wife completely disagrees with me. So Im getting told off whilst typing this.

Afraid I too disagree with you.  As long as parents are prepared and consider the needs of their baby there should be no more risk camping than staying at home, or even than walking the baby in the pram on a cold winter's day!

Sleep suits would be my reccomendation if they still do them.

We took our oldest to Spain by plane when he was 12 weeks old and he came back fine!  (he is 21 yrs now) Different to camping but still with things to consider.

Our younger son (now 18) first went tent camping in France (pre errected)  when he was 7 months old and apart from the ligistics of packing a car with two prams/ a baby bath and all the usual stuff you seem to need for babies he too came to no harm and enjoyed the camp.  As it was Sept at the time the evenings could cool quite a lot too.  That was our first ever camping experience and we have been enjoying it ever since.

Have you seen the camping cots you can get as these may help to protect the baby from the cold.  There is a thread on the caravan section with pics, of these in use today.

That reminded me of something when my little un was small and we went camping. He was seven months old and it was summer, but really damp night- time air. He was nice and warm but unfortunately the change as you describe from hot to cold, - and the condensation/night damp gave him an incredibly bad cough and lung congestion. We had to take him home straight away and he needed a course of antibiotics to clear his chest.

I will stick up for dezzie a bit here - plastic tents and young ones isnt always a good combination

we would only camp in Canvas with kids because it makes (in our view) a much better environment for them - plastic tents are hopeless in cold weather or hot sun, whereas we dont really notice either - and if you think it is too expensive you should see what you can get in the way of decent Canvas frame tents for £100 of Ebay

Hmm I have 3 kids and they have all grown up camping. My youngest turned 2 in Jan and has started her 3rd camping season. Have never had any problems taking her when she was 3 months old and I think it is as it is at home with mum/dad knowing best. If you at any time think it is not right then you go home. I must admit we co slept from birth and breast fed so I was in tune with her all night same as at home.

when my son was a baby i used a camp cot then at night i would cover the top of it with a thin cotton sheet to stop the cold air. and keep the cot right next to our sleeping bags . we used to be all in a row very cosy. my older son loved it and thought we should do the same at home

We took a travel cot (when the little 'un starts rolling/crawling, very useful as a play pen while you put up the tent or light the BBQ for example) and put a small duvet under the sheet. Usual layers, vest, sleepsuit, then an all-in one fleece suit (with fold-over mitts and hood), then a 2.5 tog baby sleeping bag and extra cellular blankets on top.

If you are not too scared, the best thing for your baby in the cold (whether indoors or out) is shared body heat from you - if you are ok with co-sleeping, wrap a duvet around the pair of you and let baby sleep on your chest.
