I am considering a camping trailer to transport the famly gear. The erde 142 with lockable hard top seems good (although around £750 for that setup).

Which trailer would you recommend?

Hi Johnny.
We went for the Lider Alicante, 13" wheel 5x4ft unit, it's not a specific camping trailer, but does the job fine.

It came with ABS Lid, and RoofRack along with spare wheel and mount.

We added a RoofBox and "Trailer Tongue Box".

Size for size the Lider models are cheaper than there Erde/Daxara counterparts.

Last year we towed it down to the South of France and back, some 2000 miles, hardley noticed it was there whilst cruising down the French autoroutes at 81mph.

Photo in my gallery.

We just bought a second hand one off a man i work with, hes an engineer and built it himself. Its really sturdy and fantastic build quality!

We looked at the Erde ones but didnt like the prices as once you start adding on a few extras its expensive!

We have high sides on ours and a locking lid!

We paid £80 and i think its a real bargain!

One of the best camping trailers is Brenderup 1205S or similar size. These trailers are very well built we use the smaller 1150 and have covered over 30,000 miles with it, apart from tyres its been perfect.

Agree with Scamp. Brenderup range are very good. Have proper car wheels. made by Thule. they tow very well.

I had the 2205s,I built my own hard top, and bike carrier for 5 bikes. Purchased it second hand off ebay, buyer desperate to sell, wrong time of year and  he had done a bad listing  so i got it for a bargin. I modified it, then took to france, sold it a year for a large profit, i only sold it due to buying my folding camper, wished i had not sold it now.

Get the biggest trailer you can afford, belive me you will always fill it!!!!!!!!

expensive new, but they hold their price if you look after them and know how to list things well on ebay.

Get the biggest one you can afford as no matter how big the trailer is, it never seems to be quite big enough (or is that just me??!!)

Thanks for all your advice folks. Im now looking at the Lider and brenderup options since the responses. Getting the right/size trailer is not cheap!

Hi Johnny.

Don't go of the internet prices for Lider trailers, we visited the main UK importer distributor, Red Cap garage at Blackburn, they did us a well good deal, as we went for all the extras, and we saved a packet compared to the internet prices.

Also remember that the Lider trailers have a solid steel floor, wheras the Brendurup have plywood/lamited flooring, pros and cons for both of course.

The Brenderup are more pretty looking than the Lider, but Lider are built a bit like a Russian tank lol.

There is no probs with the floors on the brenderup trailers, they are more comercial standard trailers than a camping trailer, i had a large ride on mower in mine  (750kg max pay load). The steel floors are only sheel steel, not 1/2" plate.

If you want a trailer built like a tank ( and weighs like one) buy an Ivor Williams

But on a serious note, buy the biggest you can, mine was 7ft x 4ft internal size and we still filled it with 2 weeks of camping stuff, but we did had everything you could think off.

make sure you get the 13" car wheel type rather than the pressed steel type ( like on a wheel barrow) fitted to the smaller Erde style trailers.

As Francais mentioned, if buying new you will get a better deal with a complete set up.

This time of year, second hand trailers go up in price, watch some on ebay to get a rough idea on how much they are going for.

On a side note, Wickes of all places sell a couple of the Erde trailers, these are alot cheaper than Halfords.

Hi redcap by telephone quoted 575 for lider alicante and 272 for hard top. Does that seem expensive?

We ended up getting a second hand Brenderup 1150 from Ebay for 425. I really did want the bigger size, but it would have been a squeeze in the garage and finances would not allow for it either!

Really pleased with it as it is in mint condition. Good quality solid trailer and I can fit so much into it. Taking on its maiden voyage over the Whit holidays.

Hi Johnny.

Mine worked out a little cheaper I guess c/w Spare wheel/carrier and RoofRack, although at the time the VAT was at 15% not to mention that it was early December and snowing!. so I guess the price you mention is fair, and probably still cheaper than internet prices.

Red Cap fitted my towbar and cam-bus 13 pin coded electrics at the same time, so the trailer has a 13 pin plug. I wanted to go down the single plug 13 pin route, in case I need to tow a caravan, also my Thule bike carrier uses the 13 pin plug, so no need for an adapter anymore.

I got a bill for the whole lot, so it's hard to say, exactly what the trailer cost me.

Funny thing is someone drove into the back of my car in November 2010, and did about 4k worth of damage to the car, so Red Cap supplied a replacement Westfalia Swan Neck towbar, as the crash damaged the original one. so I have got a shiny new towbar on my car, well not my car as it belongs to the firm I work for, in fact it dosn't belong to them either, as it is a VW Fleet lease car.

Andy.

we went to look at buying an Erde 142 but ended up buying a 153 commercial trailer which has the full size wheels.  At the same time we purchased the ABS lid, spare wheel and carrier, jockey wheel, wheel clamp and coupling lock.  It cost a lot more than we'd bargained for but it's been a godsend having the space (god knows how we managed before).  Last week we also went and bought the extention sides to increase the space we have as I've filled it lol
