just wondering if a 5 man  tent can be classed as a pup tent or will it have its own pitch

I doubt that counts as a pup tent. Doubtful it will fit on the same pitch space as the main tent.

I think the max you might get away with for a pup tent is a two to three man, of course that means a low dome or pop up as opposed to and outwell carolina s which is technicalliy a three man.

I would class a pup tent as a small two man tent without a separate living area, purely sleeping accommodation.

My son is 6'3 and only 15 and will not fit in a two man tent unless I bend him in half.  He is in a Gelert Rocky 3 3 man tent with front small living area and I have never been questioned.
