Until two winters ago I didn't have EHU and of course used gas. After getting EHU, mainly for a heater, I then started looking for other electrical appliances which would make camping more comfortable. I have electric lights, mini fridge, heater, a small radio CD player, electric kettle, electric airbed pump and yesterday I splashed out on a Tesco toaster for £4.95 (now I'm a real glamper!)
However, I still carry the same gear that I had before EHU...i.e a gas suitcase cooker, battery lanterns and torches, battery airbed pump (in case the electric one breaks down) ordinary kettle etc. I haven't done it deliberately it's just that EHU is 'extra' to my normal camping rather than in place of, and should there be a power cut on site I will still survive.
I am finding though, that I probably would not go camping, except in mid summer when the nights are warm, on anything other then an EHU pitch which does limit the choices a little.
