There may well be lots of these threads out there but i couldn't find them... We are taking deliver of a VW California next week and wondered what your list of essentials would be please?
New to Campervanning - have always gone under canvas :)
hi heidi dont know if these are what you call essentials but theyre what we ve got . step , levelling blocks , hook up cable , awning , leisure battery ,
Nothing more than you take camping really, I presume it has gas bottle & ehu lead? Apart from that food, bedding & stuff you normally take like curling tongs etc. You can get a Fiamma bike rack that clamps to tailgate specific for your van if you want it.
Apart from all the above essentials, we struggled with finding a gas bbq to fit, especially when packed for a 2 week holiday. The Cobb is compact and does loads but we had no room for it and the Cadac was heavy and large. So we got ourselves a Party Grill for 20 quid out of camping and general. It takes up hardly any space and connects to the gas bottle used in the van for the cooker. No attachments needed, it just screws on. It has a little flat section for eggs (we've managed 3) or veggies and a griddle for meat. Take the griddle off and theres a single burner underneath! We carry a small 'spare' gas canister when away for a long break and usually just screw it onto this if we're feeling lazy.
For weekends away we wouldn't be without a portable gas ring with cartridges and a heat diffuser!
For taking advantage of electric hook up, well you've paid for it haven't you, we invested in a small electric hob, kettle and lamp which means we hardly have to use any gas at all and saves the leisure battery by not using lights too much. ...in fact we've still go the same gas bottle we had 3 years ago! With extension plug we can cook outside the camper when weather allows.
Good buy is a roll of the stuff that stops things sliding, 99p shop for this. We use it on shelves for small items, and floor if we have any precious shopping! Collapsible plastic boxes also worth it. We don't use the heavy table and stand that came with our camper but have a folding plastic one that slides behind driver/passenger seat. Saves on weight. Never fill up with water as we stay at camp sites and use facilities there, leaves sink free for more storage...important when bringing back the wine!
