Can some please tell me about SI mats? I keep seeing people on here talking about them and how warm and comfy they are but I have no idea what they are!!!
We currently use airbeds with a fleece sheet and I am always cold, so could do with something nice and warm!
Thanks.

Hi Pillarose,

They are Self Inflating Mats. Bit like a memory foam mattress for camping. When you open the valve they suck in air and inflate then you give a couple of puffs to the firmness you require. You roll them tight to deflate. Come in all thicknesses from 2.5 up to at least 10cms but thicker are naturally more bulky and more expensive. Next time you are in Tesco look at the camping section as they do a basic (2.5cm, £15) one and at least you'll get an idea of what they are like.

Hi, they're like an airbed, but with foam inside. To inflate you undo one or two valves and the foam expands back to its  original size. (in theory)

The foam creates a warm barrier, and you can add a small amount of air by mouth, only a few breaths. They are also softer than an airbed. I have two and I love them better than any other type of camping bed that I have. To pack away, undo the the valves again and roll the air out. Once rolled re tighten the valve and it stays rolled up

EDIT       ditto

There are some videos here which tell you a little bit about them.

We started on airbeds, but much prefer SIMs, although we now have a trailer tent DD is still on a mat in the underbed tent, and we still tent camp now and again. My personal favourite is an Alpkit Dozer, but there is one you can get a memory foam topper for, which sounds very comfortable!

All the best,
Alison

Thanks for that everyone.
So are they comfier than airbeds? Also, the thicker ones, are they as thick as airbeds? Is not like sleeping on one of those thin camping mats is it?

Also, if I was looking to buy one, what brand would I look for and is there a specific spec that is best?
Thanks again.

Not used them camping yet but I got 3 from Costco last week.  They are 7.5cm thick and were about £17 each. DD and DS seem to think they are comfortable and I have to say I'm impressed with them but will still sleep on my Aerobed!

This might seem an odd question, but does anyone use these and naturally sleep on their side? If so, is the material thick/firm enough to keep you away from the ground and keep you comfy as well?

I ask because I simply can't nod off on my back, and when lying on my side, I'm concerned that I might "bottom out" on a SIM as my weight will be distributed in a much smaller area than flat on my back.

I sleep on my side on a 7.5cm SIM without 'bottoming out'.  Very comfy.

It helps to have a decent width of mat, especially if you curl up on your side.

That's exactly what I was thinking DamonST. How can sleeping on your side on something so thin actually be comfy???

I think I may have to stick to my Aerobed until I actually come across some SI mats.

Thanks again all.

Hi Gear Discoverer Sleeping Mat - definately stops the bottoming out as it has a slight raised edge - amazing sleep even for the not so slim of us who also sleep on our side! Not the cheapest but wouldnot swap it for the world

Thinner peolple can still have problems with hips etc. contacting the ground. They have a smaller contact area to spread the load  !!!   As I already posted, they give me the most comfortable and warmest sleeping.

Re not like sleeping on a thin camping mat. It would be more like sleeping on about SIX camping mats, with some extra air to adjust to maximum comfort.

I just bought a Carp Bed Chair for more comfort as I am getting older, and have dodgy knees, but I can say that I sleep on my side and have never been uncomfortable on my SIM.

It was a Fat Airic which has since been renamed the Dozer, I am hoping that my daughter will have many years wear out of it now.

No idea about doubles, but am sure that 2 joined will be very comfy.
