We are after a trailer for our family holidays as with four children and all the extras our people carrier is running out of room. Finances are a bit tight so we are looking for a bargain. Went to look at a second hand wooden trailer tonight, but whilst my DH was quite pleased with it, I was disappointed by how it looked (one mudguard broken off, old cover and a bit of rust on the metal frame), the wood looked sound enough and it comes with electrics and spare wheel. Could be prettied up I guess but I'm not too sure. How easy is it to fix up a trailer. The guy wants £85 for it - is that too much or a good price? Been watching local paper and on ebay but nothing local.
Any input or advice on glamping a trailer much appreciated.
Take a look at towequipe (its a bit like the budget version of towsure) website and see how much the components to glamp it up would cost. I was lucky and picked up a trailer in good condition for for just £25, but I have still spent over £100 pimping and protecting it.
Hi Firstly trailers are always in high demand and always command a strong price in the secondhand market if your looking for a fair deal forget e bay for trailers as everyone wants one Take my word for it i spent weeks looking around for a decent 6 x 4 Trailer eventially i found one in my local Friday Ad.
Again like the one you have seen it was a bit tatty however from shopping around on e bay i found lots of companies selling replacement mudgaurds new light boxes ETc i picked up 2 new factory moulded strong 10Inch mudgaurds for £11.00 with postage and with the trailer being wooded they were a breeze to fit bought the stainless steel nuts and bolts from Wilkinsons for £0.97
The company is called leisure mart on E Bay User ID mart-01
I also fitted 8 stainless steel lashing rings measured and fitted to the sides these at my local trailer part shop where £8.00 each picked them up online for £16.00 for all Eight.
In relation to the price for the trailer £85.00 sounds fair i paid £200.00 for mine do you have any pictures of the trailer i could view I may be able to be more specific as to if this is a fair price or not
Is there any rusting to the axle or around the hubs, does the trailer woble if you shake the side.
Providing the axle and suspension are in good order, the cosmetics are quite easy & cheap to sort out.
We paid £65 for a sad looking trailer with tatty plywood sides & base, but the main frame, axle & suspension were fine. I rubbed the angle iron frame down & painted it with black Smoothite, we replaced the plywood base, and replaced the sides with tounge'n'groove. I stained & Danish Oiled the tounge'n'groove before hubby fitted it, bought a new Pyramid cover & fixing studs, and it looks great now - hubby says it looks more like a piece of fine furniture. It was an interesting project to do, and it really didn't cost a lot to make a new trailer out of an old one.
Its all about supply and demand and has already been said trailers are always in demand. What you need to be careful of is the cost of buying and doing up a tatty one doesnt come to more than the cost of buying a decent one

Holdol - wish I'd known you were selling it....bargain
Well, we've decided to go for it. Seller agreed to accept £70 and husband fairly sure it's sound, it's more cosmetic than anything else - but that's what bothers me, I want a trailer that looks nice. He's promised to fix it up and gave the guy a £20 deposit til we can pick it up.
Been scouring paper, free ads and ebay but either they are sold or out of our price range at the moment. As much as I'd love a shiny new one (or even a shiny second hand one) I can't see that happening so this may be our best option.
First step will be a safety check, and make sure the tyres are in fairly good condition and not past their 'sell by date' which is the 6th year past their date of manufacture.
even if a tyre looks ok from the outside after this date, you cannot see any possible small cracks or perising going on internally, and they need to be replaced with tyres of the same grade and size.
