Last year our friend went into our tent to grab some birthday cake candles we had left behind, she couldn't resist stealing a jaffa cake and the guy pitched next to us saw her through the window exclaiming 'I'm watching you'! Needless to say she was embarrassed (He did know we were all together) but it was nice to know our neighbours were looking out.

In theory someone could take quite a bit of moneys worth from our tent. The EHU lead, kettle, cooker and heater would be worth over £100. Then add in the coolbox, furniture, sleeping bags etc and you are probably looking at around £300+.

I have honestly never really given it a thought, although we make sure that things like Ipods, phones and cameras get locked in the car or taken with us. We even leave our bikes outside overnight, and last time we were away there was nowhere to lock them up so we just locked them all together and put them out of sight.

Is comforting to know that in 2011 you can still trust people around you. Just out of interest has anyone on here ever had anything stolen from their tent?

A determined thief will break into a tent / caravan with ease. We've had a caraven broken into and the company who service the van say most caravans are easy to break into door / window / locks are not the same as your home as much more flimsy.

The worst mistake we made was my wife taking her bag out of the car and putting it into the boot. This was seen in a car park by thiefs who beleive it or not just sit in wait for the pickings. The car rear window was smashed a bag stolen. The think is there was nothing in it. I just suggested she move it fron view.

Hi , When i was camping i used  a few fishing rod / line alarm's on the door zipper's from the pound shop , which were pegged into the ground , they certainly frightened the death out of me a few time's , forgetting they were there .

We had stuff stolen from our tent a few years ago. It happened at night, whilst we were asleep, and they unhooked a couple of pegs and slid under. All valuables were packed safely away, but they grabbed anything that looked likely. We lost 2 rucksacks with day stuff like suncream, maps, guide book, water bottles etc in them. Its amazing how that non-valuable stuff mounts up! Now we always unpack, and any bags go in the car.

Our friends who were in the next tent lost a good rucksack with all their cooking gear in!

The policeman who came said it's really quite common, though I haven't heard of anyone else, either before or since. That said, the same year we were at Great Langdale and they had notices up saying they had had thefts both from and OF tents. Can you imagine coming back from your days walking to no tent? Of course we now have a really big one with lots of kit purely for protection!
