Just come back from 5 nights under canvas and the OH is complaining how he finds it very uncomfortable sleeping on our double airbed (double in height too). It has been suggested to him that air mats are more comfortable?

Would love your views on this and also if we were to purchase air mats - the best ones to buy.

Hi Bettyj69 there have been numerous threads on slef inflating mats (SIM) so do a forum search and I am sure you will find loads of info.

I was always a airbed girl thinking that with a bad back a SIM was not for me. I have tries every airbed know to man in the hunt for a decent nights kip and never found it. I eventually gave in and tried a SIM, a nice big fat Dozer from Alpkit and I have to say I have never looked back. The first night it took a bit of getting used to but I found it much warmer than a air mattress and didnt disturb much in the night. Next day I didnt have all the usual aches and pains form the airbed either. I am of the cuddly variety and didnt get any 'hips on the floor' which I had been worried about, just a comfy warm nights sleep. I for one wont be going back to an airmatress, when the day comes that I cant get up and down to the floor I will probably stick a SIM on top of a camp bed :)

We struggled with airbeds, we had a couple of doubles and always woke up sore. Not so with the campbeds, we got 2 and put them together so we can still use our double sleeping bag. another plus is that 1 person can move around without disturbing the other, unlike airbeds in which as soon as my OH got in, it would catapult me across the tent.

We have a double multimat and the kids have outwell sims and we have never slept better. Really comfy, alot warmer and so easy to put up and down. I will never use an airbed again!!! And I can vouch for the outwell ones being wipeable as my DD was sick all over it on the last night

Hi,
My wife loves camping but hates bed time as never comfortable and always too cold. We have tried blankets underneath,roll mats,2x double air beds,thick sleeping bags and duvet on top. I have now bought a double Kampa camp bed with a double 7.5cm Vango Self inflating mattress on top ,then blanket with duvet over. We have just come back from a weeks camping near Settle and had the best nights sleep ever.
Being off the ground (nice and warm) coupled with the sim for padding and leveling the camp bed out it made it just like a normal double bed. We also had a lot of storage space underneath the camp bed for cases and alike.
Its a bit pricey (£120 for whole setup) but what a difference it makes.

Buying my 10cm SIM was one of my best decisions ever. So so comfy and incredibly warm. To try to illustrate the difference in warmth, last August, using airbeds, I went to bed wearing many layers of clothing, including a fleece hat and jumper, and had a mountain of extra blankets both under and over me. And still I felt the cold creeping in as the night wore on. Earlier this year I went to bed on my SIM in short sleeved cotton PJs with just my duvet over me. I was toasty warm, and astonished to find my tent covered in a heavy frost!

So yeah, try a good SIM.

I looked at these mulitmats today! They do look good, there were some that are smaller that would possible only be for haed and body....not legs? Bit confused on that one.

Def thinking of getting a multmat now or these colemans double beds?

hi, are the cheaper ones available in aldis/lidls etc worthwhile, or should i invest a lot more?

I like the idea of the thicker, more expensive sones, but would struggle to get them on a motorbike - but would compromise on something else if your recomendations warrant it.

After all your comments, we have just bought the sims which Aldi's were selling. Thought we would start with cheaper ones first.

We always found with SIMs you tend to get what you pay for the cheaper ones never seem as good as the more expensive brands. We started of with the cheap Aldi ones ok for kids OH hated hers, saying it was the worst thing she had ever slept on, but she now sleeps soundly on her 10cm thick one, money well spent

I posted on this topic recently, I personally recommend self inflating mats. Here is my post from a similar discussion:

We tried using air beds, but quickly gave up on them switching instead to self inflating mats - we have a double one for my wife & myself, plus three single ones for the children. The great thing about them is they don't take up much space in the car, and unlike air beds don't go down over time. I also find them more comfortable.
