A battery lantern will never burn as bright as a Coleman petrol one, unless the battery's are huge.
Try the ones in this link, pretty high light output relative to size and you can use re-chargeable AAs

Have been looking for a decent battery lantern, I already have a couple of the 20 LED Aldi remote lanterns, but they are no way as bright as my CampinGaz Lumogaz RPZ.
The Lidl lanterns on sale next week, should be a lot better, as they use a 7w Flu-Tube and run of 4 "D" cell batteries. although I find that fluorescent light attracts flying insects like nothing else.
But better things are on the horizon, from Coleman and Rayovac, these lanterns are available in the US, the Coleman runs of 8 "D" cells and the Rayovac runs of 4 "D" cells. naturaly the Coleman gives double run time of 150hrs on max brightness.
Both are using upto 4 Cree LED's and are rated as 300 Lumen 6W, which believe me is as bright as you would need for camping, of course both lamps have varible brightness control.
US prices are looking good at under £40 for either lamp, I am sure we will be seeing these lamps over here soon.

I recently had to buy a new light. Did my research and this one seemed to be coming out well in the reviews. I have only used it twice but very happy.
The reviews I read said the battery charge lasts for absolutely ages and is very, very bright.
I liked the fact that it had a car charger as well as mains in case you get caught short. The only one thing I would have liked that it didn''t have was a remote control but the long battery re-charge and car charger was more important. Hope that helps.

Hi Keacal.
Lidl are doing a camping lantern with 7w Flu-Tube next Thursday for £20, that should be quite bright, although Flu-Tube lamps seem to attract flying insects more than any other type of light. and of course the Tube does not have a longlife like LED, and can be easaly brocken.
I like the idea of a lantern using regular batteries, especialy "C" or "D" size, that way I can use rechargeables, and have a spare set of batteries on standby for when the lamp goes out.
I will be keeping an eye out for the Lanterns using Cree LED, they are sure to be bright at between 300 and 600 Lumens, although on paper that is still only about half the brightness of my CampinGaz Lumagaz RPZ Lantern, although only quite small it's claimed to deliver the equivilant light of an 80w regular lightbulb.

Cheers Francais,
I am suprised you bother with regular battery operated lights. Seems like a faff. Got to make sure the batteries are charged in readiness, possibly take a recharger with you which is a further faff, plus EHU then needed. The one from argos was highly recommended because of the long charge life of the battery. Plus 30 led is the brightest of the normal camping lamps I could find. Actually, it would have been nice if the brightness was adjustable.
As I say, I have only used it on two quick trips but so far so good. Plus I can charge it as I drive to the campsite if it is flat when I go to pack it.
But we all look for different things which is what sharing on this website is all about.

I have a couple of Vango LED battery lanterns which are pretty good, and the battery life is very good as well. I can't find the exact model at the moment, but I think we have 20LED and 12LED. Ours is quite a big tent and if I was replacing I might go for a bit more than 20, but its ok.
The problem we've had in the past with recheargables is that the batteries failed because they weren't being used enough. With the rate the technology is progressing that might not be a problem anymore, but I'd rather use one which takes regular or recheargable batteries. That way I can always have spares.
------------- All the best,
Alison

I bought 3 of these from decathlon, they have 2 settings dim and bright plus they flash, they also have a ir sensor and will auto switch off. They are really bright 300 lumens and last for days. They are really rugged as mine have been dropped numerous times and still work, water proof (not submersable but rain proof)
The same latern is made by other firms and I think you can get one for about 20 quid which is really cheap.

Hi neilster and blazer, you both seem to have the same lamp, just different brands, it also looks the exact same as the Rayovac Spotsman Extreme.
All are 300 Lumen, and using 3 "D" cell batteries and use 3 Cree LED's.
I am passing by Decathlon later this week, so will have a look, thanks for that blazer.
Wow just checked online and they have 54 in stock!.
