We're always abroad ....never had a problem, though we do take precautions as locking bikes together etc (above)

Find continental sites are mostly well secured and campers are very honest as a species!

Just wanted to add some info about the Portalock to this thread. I got it off ebay for £7 + p&p and picked it up from the PO this morning.

After a quick test in the garden I am VERY impressed. Our garden is rocky under the topsoil and it took me three attempts to find a spot where it would go in more than 6 inches, but once I found a clear area it went straight in. The shaft is longer than I expected - about 16 inches. Without a spade and a good 15 minutes (or a JCB!) there's no way you could budge it. It is certainly enough to deter an opportunist.

Combined with a decent lock I think I will have peace of mind leaving our bikes on site if we go out in the car for the day.

We're taking a trailer this year so bikes will be locked to the trailer making a really big heavy and blinking difficult to lift bundle.

Saying that the portalock might offer up just a little more security.

When we used to "tent camp" more(..at festivals mainly),I used to use a cork-screw dog tether(..shortened and with the top loop welded closed),with a long cable lock wound through stuff..

...but those Portalock things look really good..

..and for the price,if I was looking to secure several hundred quids worth of bike(s),I'd probably get two, while I was at it

I have bought 2 of the dog anchors, they are very long and sturdy looking. The idea is to screw 2 into the ground and then lay bikes flat on topp of them and d lock into the anchor. Only way to get anchors out is by unscrewing, but by locking 2 together, you can't do this, and can't dig them out if all bikes on top.
