I hope this isnt a stupid question, i am getting my first tent, its a Urban Escape Altai 2 Man Tent.

It says it comes with a groundsheet, but i am thinking i would like a seperate one to keep everything from the tent pack cleaner, so what i want to know is 2 things :

1 if i bought a seperate one how do i know what size is best for this tent or are they mostly standard sizes anyway?

2 if i can buy a 2nd ground sheet, will it serve its porpose to keep the tents own groundsheet much cleaner / less chance of it cutting on stones etc..

Or with the type of tent i am getting would it just not be advisable to buy a 2nd one because it already has its own?

If you want a ready made footprint groundsheet, you need one for a 2 man tent, Vango do one and there are probably others. A much cheaper option would be to make your own and if you search "footprints" (yellow box above) you will find lots of helpful advice. They do protect the tent's existing groundsheet as you say.

Get a small tarp from a DIY shop and make your own.  Just make sure you fold it under the tent so that none sticks out from under the sides.

We went with the cheaper option...used tarp. Had to use 2 & make the size we needed but works a treat. Keeps the bottom of the tents own ground sheet all nice & clean if the tarp gets dirty it can be folded seperately & then popped into a black bin liner & sorted when we get home.

thanks for the replies, this seems a pretty lively forum, very fast answers :)

I think i am going to get a groundsheet rather than a tarp, my only issue is because i cant get an exact size for my tent, am i best just getting one that i know is a bit bigger than the tent and then just fold it under its self still its the same size as the tent?

Hiyas, it will need to be a bit smaller so  if ...haha... i mean when it rains that the water does not get between the tents ground sheet & the 1 you put under it.

can the seperate groundsheets not be folded in on them selfs if they are slightly bigger though?

As long as the footprint groundsheet is smaller than the tent groundsheet it will work. If it's bigger, water can get trapped between the two. It may get trapped in a fold I suppose but I think it would be okay.

thats great advice thanks, the tent ive got (which hasnt been used yet, but will be in aug) is 400cm x 150cm which is a pretty weird measurement (roughly 13x5ft)

the smallest ground sheet i can find which would fit it longways is a 13x10.

Idearly would it not really matter if i peg the seperate groundsheet down and the 10ft side folder right over so its then 13x5ft?

sorry if these questions sound basic to everyone, i just hope im correct how im thinking about this.

ok well i have orded what i wanted now, my tent in total is roughly 13x5 foot (400cm x150cm).

i didnt buy the 13x10 as i mentioned above (was going to fold it), I bought two 6x4ft footprint groundsheets, i can then just have them both together and make it 12x4ft, i think that seems reasonable with it having to be slightly smaller?

I suppose you didn't consider a 'breathable' awning floor cover material .... then any moisture that got between the two could drain away?

Probably!
That'll give you 6 inches clearance all the way round ... so you'll get a bit of 'muck' round the outside of your groundsheet ... mind you, it won't be Glastonbury proof!!
A porous ground sheet could protrude a few inches, thus keeping the tent's groundsheet totally protected.
