Hi. I'm very new to caravanning - we have just bought a second hand caravan fitted with a motor mover.

Can anyone tell me whether the caravan handbrake should be OFF or ON when we ratchet the mover against the wheels?

I am assuming that the handbrake should be OFF when we actually use the motor mover to move the caravan but not sure whether the handbrake should be ON to start?

Apologies if the question is basic - but we are worried about causing damage if we do things the wrong way.

Hoping someone can help.

Many thanks.

Does not really matter as long as your van is secure from moving when unhitched and you are working round it.

Greetings,

Get into the habit of either of the below 2 scenarios.

1. Put on the mover while the van is attached to the towing vehicle OR:
2 Put on the mover when the handbrake on the caravan is in the 'ON' position.

In doing so you are ensuring that the caravan isn't going to move until you are ready for it to move (and that includes well intentioned people assisting you.

Having said all that, I guarentee that on some occasion, you will attempt to move the 'van with the mover engaged AND the Handbrake engaged DOH!

How come when some people visit the fountain of knowledge, they only gargle!!!

PS

Not connected with use of motor mover, but unless you have the most recent parking brake type with a gas strut; it is not commonly understood that unless the parking brake is applied whilst 'van, is being eased backwards and the parking brake lever goes to an almost upright position, the parking brake is not fully applied.  This is to do with the auto reverse machanism in the overrun braking system.

Too difficult to explain in a sentence, but you might like to mention this to your service people who will easily demonstrate it to you.

Enjoy your caravanning!!!
