as we have moved from tents to a caravan, we only needed a lantern for emergency cover really so opted for a cheaper model £12.97 off ebay, new not used, remote contol, gives off plenty of light, don't really know if it fits your needs though ,it IS battery operated but it's a re-chargable model ,lasts upto 5 hrs on a full charge, comes with the charger and car cigarette lighter adapter.
do'es the job for us and not too costly to re-place if accidents happen.
when we had the tent we had one like this but that went with the tent when we sold it, to be honest it worked queit well in our 3 man tent but it only gave 20 minutes light for 1 minute of winding, survived a few knocks and bumps tho', again less than 20 quid new on ebay and in most cases p&p free.
hope all this helps

Have been looking around for a decent battery lantern, Lidl have the camping lanterns that use a 7w (aprox 500 lumen) or 40watt old light bulb, Fluorescent tube type bulb. not a very nice light, and they also seem to atract every flying insect within a mile of your tent, more than other lighting types do.
The Lidl lantern is £20 and comes with 4 x "D" batteries.
So far I have found a 3 x Cree LED lantern, that runs on 3 x "D" batteries, for which I would use rechargeables, the lantern is from favourlight in China, and marketed under a few different brands, some of which are listed below.
At 300 Lumens, the lantern will give a decent glow, although as a comparision a small CampinGaz lantern will give around 1400 lumens or 80watt in old money.
Varta
Ring
Outwell
Silverpoint
Frendo (Decathlon) although advertised as 300 lumen, stock is 240 lumen!.
Rayovac (USA)
All brands are the exact same lantern, prices range from £22 to £47!.

I just bought the 300 lumen Silverpoint for £30 inc. delivery: http://www.torchdirect.co.uk/camping-fishing/action/add/
Where can you get it for £22? And you say it's actually 240 lumens? How do you know?
I'm also interested in the ALDI lamp - if you don't like the colour of the light, you can buy a "warm white" replacement (look for light temperature values of between 2000 and 3000 K (Kelvin).
I can't imagine there's much difference between the white light of the 3 W 300 lumen LED lamp and the ALDI 7 W CFL lamp in terms of the whiteness of the light? At least you can change the bulb on the ALDI one.

Hi Sean.
From memory, the lowest price was on Pixmania, looks like the have sold out now.
As for the 240 Lumen situation, I discovered that when I visited Decathlon at Stockport, although the lantern is advertised as 300 Lumen, all the boxed stock they had on display said 240 lumen.
I sent an e-mail to Decathlon, at stockport, and they then contacted France, apparently they had ordered, what they believed to be 300 lumen, so they are now speaking to thier supllier.
So I am keeping an eye on the Decathlon price, as it sure to drop anytime soon, and even though the stock says 240 lumen, it must be the same lantern as the 300 lumen ones out there.
Andy.
