I've got an outwell vermont xl - the main tent bag is frustratingly small for this large tent - I can get the tent back in but it's always a struggle. In fact this is the most difficult part of using the tent! Guaranteed to cause an argument on the last day of the trip!

Can anyone suggest where I can find a larger but robust bag that would just make life easier. I've searched the web but can't seem to find anything that would work.

Any advice much appreciated.

Hi and welcome to UKCS

What method do you fold/roll away the tent?

We have 2 Outwells and both go into their respective without much trouble.

Before you start folding/rolling the tent leave the doors open to let the air so it doesn't cause a vacuum of trapped air.

We fold in half length ways and then the half thats left into 3,this is just the right width for the bag

Then one of us starts rolling as tight as possible(make sure you start at the back or you will get trapped air)
While one is rolling the other one is just in front squashing the air as we go.
Then the straps round and into the bag.

Hi and welcome

We have never had problems getting any Outwell tent back in its bag. Try folding the front porch back over the main tent first, leave doors partly open and make sure the bedrooms dont drop in a big lump, get all the air out and fold to the size of the bag. If you still have problems take the bedrooms out and fold these seperately

Hi Spodomodo and welcome to the site,

Both Sunvalleysue and arsenaldes advise good techniques. I would only add that we roll, unroll and re-roll.

There was an earlier posting (possibly last summer or even earlier) that advised this and it's the best piece of advise that this forum has given us. Can't recall who was the initial poster was (thank you, masked man!)

This is such a good way of getting the excess air out and compacting the tent down, that I was even able to pack the tent away solo on one occasion.

we use the roll/un-roll/re-roll method and can get our tent back into the bag with no problems at all...once you learn a technique that works for you i'm sure you'll do just fine...

Thanks all for the advice.

Maybe I'll persevere and try the rollunroll technique.

Cheers.

Outwell tent bags are usually huge so I am surprised you are struggling with yours. Outwell do sell tent bags you could take a look on their website or maybe Yeomans or Ebay for a bigger bag.

The roll/un-roll/re-roll method works for us too

AND - because we need a big pitch and always have ehu we find it keeps the tin-tenters around us amused while the adverts are on..........

I agree the Outwell bags are normally quite generous but for info have a look at 'bags4everything.co.uk'

They make bags to measure and also stock lots of different style bags for holding camping stuff. I'm liking the look of the padded lcd tv bags. Handy for when you get stuff that doesn't come with its own bag.

We get the kids to roll along the folded tent to help get the air out!

Make sure when you roll a tent up that the pins are on the outside or at least lying flat. If you are going to roll all over your tent trying to get the air out there is a possibility the pins can damage the material.

I lay my tent out then fold it completely in half so that the rings and pins on both sides are together and on the outside of the tent. I then fold it completely in half again and it is now the right width to fit the bag. It can then be rolled up from one end, usually the back end so that air can escape out the front door as previously suggested. I actually prefer to fold mine again in the opposite direction before rolling but that is personal choice.

The last time I went camping a few weeks ago I had problems getting it rolled up. I don't know why as this was the first time I had trouble. It was quite a breezy day so I think more air was getting in than I could squeeze out. I was very grateful when another camper who had obviously seen me struggling (and cursing) came across to lend a hand and between us we managed to get it rolled up. Getting it into the bag was the easy bit.
