First time for us to use a gas cooker, it says it can be used with either Propane or Butane....I have no idea and all the info I'm getting as got me right confused! Help anyone in the know and able to offer some advice please.

Propane is better than butane in cold temperatures ,so if you are planning to camp through the year get propane .

The CampinGaz cylinders are Butane, and if camping in France you can get refils everywhere, unlike BP/Calor which is mostly only available in the UK.

Although CampinGaz is the most expensive gas, the cylinders are the most compact 907 being the most popular size, then the 904 and 901.

Propane still works at -40DEG C, so handy for camping at the North Pole, Butane on the other hand, will freeze at below +3DegC or there abouts.

Got to disagree with you on that one we've used butane in temps of -5c without problems propane is better at very low temps but -5c do'es for me!

We've struggled with butane at around 4 or 5 degrees C. Fine for a few minutes, but as the gas evaporates to burn, the remaining gas in the bottle cools down even more and that's when you can have problems. Have tried warming canisters up with my hands to keep them going - even contemplated using a chemical handwarmer to heat it up - but had to give up in the end.

Ive had that problem with the odd cylinder but overall im happy with Butane as i said before and its not the first time ive camped in low temps

Greetings,

If you're on a site with a toilet block I can recommend getting a bucket of hot water and putting the 907 into that on a cold morning.

It was enough to get us a cuppa and the heating on.

Hi sxis.
        Last time I went family camping in UK, was 1978!, for a fortnight during July, and yes it did rain every single day.

Since then I vowed never to go family camping ever again in UK, and ever since have been camping in the South of France, for a fortnight in July.

And guess what, in over 30 years, not a single drop of rain, just wall to wall sunshine, and temps of 40+DegC, in a word it's a no brainer.
