Hi we are newbies & just got out first caravan, now looking for a 2nd hand awning. The awning size in the manual says 998, so would I have to get an awning up to 1000 only? OR would one that is 1000-1025 still fit - does 2cm make a difference?

Thank you in advance.
Bonita

Dont think 1000 would make a difference as its only 1cm each side.Over a 1000 you might have probs as the awning will not sit right and the sides and front will be trailing on the ground.Personally i would go for 1000 option..not bigger.

This size can be a bit tricky because the awning size you need is actually a 975 - 1000 cms. which is a size 14 (in the Dorema range). However, if you pitch your van and you have to lift the near side (door side) to bring the caravan level, then the height from the ground to top of the caravan increases so there is a possibilty that the awning will be short. Looking at this factor I would tend to go for the next size up (size 15) which is 1000 - 1025 cms. and this would solve the problem. However, if you pitched your caravan on level ground then the awning could possibly be slightly too big but the remedy is that you can raise the caravan by the aid of ramps under both wheels and your awning will fit. Basically, you can take up any slack by lifting the van but you can't stretch the awning down to the ground if it's too short. I hope you understand what I'm trying explain but if you are in doubt, ask if you can try the awning first before you part with any cash.

I used to have a caravan that the official awning size was 770 cms. but the only sizes I could obtain were either a 750 or a 780 cms. so I was asking exactly the same question myself a few years back in 2006. A chap I was talking to on a rally field who had many years of experience with various awnings advised me to buy the 780 cm. awning and explained the reasons why (as I have mentioned here). Although it consumed a bit of extra time putting the van on ramps whenever we intended to erect the awning we didn't encounter any problems and it always worked for us. If we had bought the smaller size awning I guarantee that we would have wasted our money and eventually had to purchase the next size up.

Hope you find this information useful but the final choice is yours. This just helps to assist in your decision of what size is best.
