I'm surprised to here about the problems some of the guys on here have had with Go outdoors. I live in durham and use the Newcastle branch as its the nearest. The staff there could not have been more helpful. I had a problem ordering some gear over the internet and went to the store, where the manageress gave up her time to go round the shop with me giving me much welcomed advice in choosing the right products, in fact, she advised me what was on offer and the best quality and valuefor money.
On subsequent visits other members of staff have been just as helpful. They even gave up their time to show me the best way to erect a tent, which were their best value purchases and what was on offer.
I can honestly say I have never had service like it and no Im not connected with store in any way. Im just totally impressed by them.
I think what a lot of people have issues with is their pricing policy on own brand Hi Gear items, very very very hi RRPs then silly discounts which seem to change every day
------------- Experience enables you to recognize a mistake when you make it again.
Everything has been said before, but since nobody ever listens we have to keep going back and saying it all over again and again and again
I'm not sure what the fuss is about with hating Go Outdoors. It is what it is at the end of the day. I am startled if I get great service anywhere never mind at a camping shop.
When I buy anything the first thing I do is check who is selling it cheapest first. If it is Go Outdoors then I buy from them. When it comes to Hi Gear stuff I check what discount they are offering or what the Gelert equivalent price is.
When you have problems with an item that is when you often find the chains are better than the independent stores. Not always of course but I have found one man bands and family shops can be very awkward when it comes to giving moneny back or replacing items.

------------- Armchair camper with more tents than I will probably ever get the use out of.
I just shop around and go to whoever offers me the best deal for what I want. I too don't understand the fuss about Go Outdoors. If you feel they are such a rip off then don't shop there. I've picked up some good bargains there but also walked away from other items because they are too expensive.
Always had good service at Newcastle store, although on taking a defective cooker back to them the sales guy laughed at me and said no problem with a refund sir we will just put it back on the floor and sell it to another customer- thought this was pretty poor. Some Hi gear products are poor quality and actually quite expensive compared to branded items, although some are ok, but only worth paying for when they have a sale on.
I agree, Go Outdoors are generally a good place to shop. I get brilliant service from the Wigan store, but I have found that getting assistance in the Stockport store a mission impossible. I find that GO do brilliant offers when the sale is on but can be very expensive when the sale is'nt on. I nearly always buy the Hi Gear stuff and never had any bother with any of it, although I have yet to try the rock pegs I bought the other week for £1.25 per pack.
------------- When there's a knock at the door, why do dogs always think its for them?
Fat people are harder to kidnap
I am a bomb technician, if you see me running, try to keep up!
I am very happy with GO as the price match and 10% discount has saved me a fortune! Ordered a 2011 montana 6, awning, carpet and footprint for 590.00 delivered yesterday (did this by ringing the national line). Very happy bunny.
Great deal found by fellow UKCS member. Outdoor world have a 15% discount code at the moment on their entire site. Go are honoring the price match taking into account the discount code. Have a look in the tent talk forum and the original post (title Montana 6 for 387.00 if I remember rightly) for the code etc.
For me the shopping around is all part of the fun! If there were one place that genuinely was always the cheapest, for me that would take away some of the pleasure of 'camping shopping'. I am always looking for things I can adapt for use in the camper, to solve a little problem or make something easier/more comfortable, or the best price on something I want to replace or 'upgrade'.
Like others, I research where I can get things cheapest and then go there. I usually make it part of a day out, sometimes by going for a meal or, recently, by looking for a geocache. Which I am finding an excellent way of getting outdoors even when I can't be camping. Doing a bit pants at finding them though!
I would actually be disappointed if I always went to the same shop because it was always cheapest!
For me I always get what I pay for at Go Outdoors cheap, unreliable and poor customer service. I have issues with having to pay for a 'discount card' which enables them to collect & store my details.
I don't shop there any more.
------------- Smile - There is no such thing as the wrong weather, just the wrong clothing.
There are some stores where you get the same level of CS regardless of which store you visit, for example I have always found M&S and Wilkos superb in any branch.
It would seem that Go CS is variable depending on each store. Ours was good until a change of management, since then everything gets referred to him (the manager) and is way too much trouble for him. For that reason I now avoid where possible.
------------- Are you sure you've read the instructions?
Our local store is Sheffield - it's cramped and stuffy but we've never had less than great service. You can always be assured that the staff know what they're talking about, which is better than some chain camping/outdoor shops we know
I have always found ours (wolverhampton) very good, specially if you have a problem or faulty item.
My only gripe is that some of the kids who work in there don't know anything, if you need to ask any advice on camping or fishing - thats what items we usually buy.
