I know this topic is from a while ago but I just found it with a search engine, I too have problems hitching, (Terrano and Alko hitch) sometimes you can get it with door open but sometimes depending on the angle you have to reverese back at you cant always open the door enough!!!

I did hear that Alko were bringing out an improved angled hitch handle to overcome this, anybody know anything about this please?

Several people remove the screw from the red plastic handle and remove the handle before /after applying presure

On hitching you remove the handle and depress the two protruding levers to take up the slack. You can then refit the handle and apply full pressure

Repeat the process in reverse to unhitch

The new handle has been talked about for months now

Maybe it will be available from the stand at the NEC

Don't know which year though

Thanks John, I did read a few postings saying about removing the screw, and I think I will try that, however my concern is as others mentioned, I feel it would not be so easy in the dark like these winter months and there is quite a possibillity to lose the screw etc into grass (I have the knack of losing something right in front of me on a clean garage workbench never mind a blustery camp site during the hassles of hitching / unhitching etc!!!!!!!!)

But thanks for the reply and I will try it, also will email Alko and try at their stand at the show

The screw is quite long from memory but some people just put the handle on for hitching / unhitching and dispense with the screw altogether I believe

Probably after losing it on a blustery campsite !!

Dear Mr Smith

Answer to my email from Alko received this morning

Thank you for your email concerning the retro-fit 4x4 handle for AKS stabilizers.

We plan to show a preview model at the forthcoming Boat, Caravan & Leisure Show at the NEC In February.  We anticipate that this item will be on sale in early spring.  The usual caravan press will give further details of where it can be purchased from, when it is available.

Kind regards

Gaynor Davis

Bob, I have a Shogun and the Alko 2004 hitch, I raise the hitch arm just enough after the release but not vertical because the spare gets in the way, I find that works
