I have just bought our first tent after the rugrats convinced us that we "need" to camp

ALL we have so far is the tent

We are a family of 5 - 2 adults, 3 kids under 10.

SO what do we really need ?

A kind of list of basics that we could not camp happily without kind of thing ?

Also what do we save on and what do we splurge on ?

Thanks a lot
Clare

Not an expert by any means

Something to sleep on and in
Something to cook breakfast on (we eat takeaways while camping for tea)
Something to keep the beer and milk cold

You will know more after your first trip

Not much help I know, but it really is a learning process

Hiyas & welcome to the mad world. As you get more & more addicted ..the question you will be asking is ' What don't we need'  lol.

I second the checklist in the link from  Gareth29.

You need deep pockets and an ebay account. Keep an eye on ebay and there are bargains to be had.

Hello again from a well addicted camper.
It may be better to say what won't you need. Its sooo easy to get carried away.
May i suggest a large car as work will always be needing more room for the latest addition. Happy camping.

Hi. Agree with the list, but please don't feel you have to buy everything on it. Until you are sure you like camping, work out what you can "borrow" from home.

I suppose 1 thing you need that is free is a good tongue in your head, to ask for help when things just dont seem to be going to plan. Campers will always help out, but I have found that you normally have to ask for the help or they'll let struggle on because they dont want to interfere.

And for the sake of a fiver a year, a Go Outdoors card.

Happy camping, enjoy the great outdoors.

Martin

Hi,
Make sure you have enough to keep you warm at night.
The first time we camped we were freezing because we didnt take enough stuff. If you are taking blow up beds make sure you have something underneath (cardboard would do the trick and is free) something on top of the bed (fleecy blanket or sheet) warm P.J's or tracksuits and thick socks and then your duvets or sleeping bags.
