A lot depends on where you are going, for UK use I have one of the Aldi electric coolers, which is good to 18DegC below ambient.
The Aldi cooler is great for keeping water, beer and wine chilled, but I would not use it for foodstuffs, unless just for a day trip.
For Southern France during July, we use a Waeco CF25, more of a portable fridge/freezer than a cooler, it does a cracking job, and will keep to any temp you set it at, regardless of what the ambient temp is, but overkill for UK use imho.
