I was wondering if anyone could remember a tent by Lichfield the Challenger Cavalier. It's in all its original packaging and has the date of 1995 on it.

We have been saving up for a new tent but since I was recently made redundant (boooooooooo) that was put on the back burner. I wandered over to my parents house and in the garage was this little gem.

Ok so here is the thing......do you think it will still be water tight????????? Or should I go for some new waterproofing before we take this old girl on a trial run in a couple of weeks????

Any thoughts would be awesome and if anyone remembers having one of these bad boys I would be grateful if you would share any memories you have.

take it as it is, but take a can of spray water proofing with you, then if it rains and leaks spray the spot it leaks, most probably a seam, suggest you trial pitch it first though to make sure it hasn't rotted in any way.

If the tent has been dry all the years in the garage and the local mice haven't been living in it, theres a very good chance the canvas will be ok -only way to be sure is to put it up! Rubbers may have perished but thats not the end of the world!

As theres generally no shortage of rain in Oldham - put it up in the local park/friends garden and see if its water tight! You don't have to sleep in it just get it wet! In the unlikely event of Oldham being in a heatwave and you manage to persuade a friend to let you use their garden, a hose pipe with a spray head on it will be more than adequate - spray the water in the air and let it fall, don't spray it directly on the canvas as it will almost certainly leak through the seams if you do!

Well as you can imagine when I got it home the first thing I wanted to do was pitch it lol but as you rightly say Arthur.....it's chuckin it down outside so that wasn't possible. So we took it out in the living room! Everything is in extremely good nick it's spotlessly clean and to be honest looks like it has been used perhaps three times at the most. The forecast is for rain for the next 37 years but hopefully there will be a dry day inbetween to get the thing up.

Thanks for the advice and I will post pictures of this old girl eventually.

ah but you don't want a dry day to put it up! You want to put it up in the rain - a day before its going to be dry! That way you leak test it and then next day you can get it dried out before you take it down ;o)

I have a Lichfield Challenger from that era but it`s called a Classic XL5. Used it quite a lot back then, touring many sites in the north of Scotland. Still in great condition as it`s been kept in one of our spare bedrooms and aired off every year. Might try it out sometime.

I would put it up before going away in it.  Sometimes you need to have pegged it all out before you are really aware of how secure it all is.  If the tent has been stored for sometime, I wonder if there would be any deterioration in the material?  When you tighten everything up it just might come to light.

I just cracked up reading that :)  Are you absolutely sure it is only 3 and not 4 or 5.  You should apply for a job as a detective with GMP as I think you could give Sherlock Holmes a run for his money  :)
