We have only ever been away for short weekends and never needed a fridge, always managing with a cool box but now we are planning longer trips we could use a decent fridge.

Having read many of the topics already, we are unlikely to be running on gas but would need one that works well on 12V in the back of the car. Does the fridge have to be level in the car to keep it working?

We carry ours on the back seat of the car which means the fridge is far from level, it works perfectly well on 12V.

I've never quite worked out what the issue is but our Waeco combicool doesn't work well on 12v at all and tends to blow the fuse and/or melt the cable!

It may be a problem with our model but we've given up running it on 12v

Peltier effect cool boxes don't have to be kept level - they'll work any way up as long as there's airflow via the fan.

Proper 3 way fridges do have to be level to work properly.

A fridge and a cooler are two quite different items, for UK we use one of the Aldi electric coolers, it works fine for keeping drinks cool etc, but would only put fresh food in it for day trips. we keep the Aldi unit in the boot of the car at all times.

For our  fortnight campings in the South of France during July, we use a Waeco CF25 Fridge/Freezer, it works just like a domestic fridge as it is a compressor unit, so is safe for keeping fresh food in, it also works fine in the car, for the 1000 mile drive to the campsite.
