Vaude make brilliant bags, at the pricey end of things though.

I'm a big fan of Tog24. Their stuff is cheaper but always seems great quality with good features and nice looks.

Are you a lady? Consider a ladies specific bag as the straps can be a lot more comfy (curved to accommodate your curves) and they are often a bit narrower which makes them less unwieldy.

Go to a proper Outdoor Pursuits shop and try a few on. If the shop has got stairs, walk up and down them. This will give you a better idea of what is best for you.

I got a little pack that was issued in the early 90s and it's still going strong

I must confess I use my daughter's schoolbag (It's a Kangol I think) because it has lots of little zip pockets on the front for keys, tissues etc and will take drinks, packed lunch for 3 and all the other stuff you need with 2 kids in tow!

DD complains because she has to shorten the straps again afterwards...

Sometimes I even remember to take all the fluffy dangly toys off first!

I think it cost me £10 ish from a sports shop.

Fab thanks for the replies and for not laughing at me! You won't believe the bag issues I've been having!

I will go and look at some shops I think. I've also seen some nice Jansports ones, the proper outdoor bags are just so pricey!

Try these . They are lightweight and have been designed to keep the sack off your back so you don't get that sweaty clammy feeling down your back, espcially when you have taken the rucksack off and then put it on again.

I have a Freeflow ladies pack and it's great. I would just say, test it out by putting things in it. The solid back and narrow width make it impossible to get some things down into the bottom. It is great for not being too sweaty though. That said, unless you're a very sweaty person or you're going to be using it for high intensity activities you'd probably find any pack that has the cushioned mesh stuff on the back is OK.

Oh, and wear a sleeveless top when you try bags on to see if the straps irritate :)
