Some years ago I was on a campsite which did not allow open fires or fire pits. A camper a short distance away decided to put logs on his BBQ and although this was only a small fire, smoke and sparks were drifting above neighbouring tents including mine. I don't know if anyone complained but it wasn't long before the campsite owner came along and asked them to put it out.
On my next trip I noticed a very small hole in the roof of my polyester tent. Could have been caused by a birds claw but I suspect a spark from the fire may have done it.
So the next time you decide to bend the rules thinking no harm will be done...harm may well be done!
On a site which allows fires and firepits campers are aware when they go there and either take the risk or try to pitch away from and upwind from open fires. On a site which doesn't allow them, one doesn't expect to encounter them.
