It depends on a little box being ticked by the shipper on the paperwork. If they tick it you don't get hit with import duty so it is very definitey hit and miss. Both OH and I feel we are Americans born on the wrong side of the pond (so we buy from the US a lot )! Our footy team is American, we love some american food products and clothing we can't get here.
Try it out and see, but you need to weigh up if it is something you can get here, will it be cheaper to buy from US if you get taxed, if not then just buy in UK. The other consideration is that it is easier to return if you buy in UK and there are problems with the goods.

i dont think i can get hold of those items new anywhere in the u.k. i have not really looked anywhere else other than google search/ebay/amazon.

Tax on goods from abroad
If you buy goods over the internet or by mail order from outside the EU, you’ll have to pay VAT if the package is worth over £18.
If worth over £135, customs duty may also be due, although this will depend on what the goods are and where they've been sent from. However, if the actual amount of duty due is less than £9 this won’t be charged.
If someone sends you a gift in the post from outside the EU, import VAT will only be due if the package is worth over £40.
To qualify as a gift, the item must be sent from one private individual to another, with no money changing hands.''
..^so that kinda sums it up i guess. maybe it would be a good idea to buy each item (under £18) individually..
cheers.
Edit: then again, buying individually would probably mean paying more in postage overall, so would that work out actually costing more - than if buying all items in 1 bulk?
