hi, i would like to buy some (more) camping accessories..

im just wondering if anyone here has ever bought goods from amazon.com (US site) and if you know of ways to (try?) avoid paying UK tax/shipping fees.

i can see that you can select 'this item is a gift'/add note etc. - but thats probably going to be no help..?

i do have a very rough idea of the assumed extra costs (taxes/import fees).

any advice or suggestions much appreciated!

cheers.

bought stuff from US websites beofre, sometimes you get hit with import and sometime you don't. A bit pot luck TBH.

if you do get hit with import then the shipper will usually add-on a fee for holding it until you pay up or for paying on your behalf

What are you looking to buy ? Can it not be had from a UK or EU site ?

It depends on a little box being ticked by the shipper on the paperwork.  If they tick it you don't get hit with import duty so it is very definitey hit and miss.  Both OH and I feel we are Americans born on the wrong side of the pond (so we buy from the US a lot )! Our footy team is American, we love some american food products and clothing we can't get here.

Try it out and see, but you need to weigh up if it is something you can get here, will it be cheaper to buy from US if you get taxed, if not then just buy in UK.  The other consideration is that it is easier to return if you buy in UK and there are problems with the goods.

hi guys,

thanks for your responses, this is what i'm after to buy:

2x Coleman 295A720T Reflector, Lantern
2x Coleman Lantern Hanger
2x Coleman Liquid-Fuel Lantern Hard-Shell Carry Case
2x Mr. Heater 75,000 BTU 12-Foot Propane Hose Assembly #F273702

Items (8): £88.73
Shipping & Handling: £21.58
Total Before Tax: £132.37
Estimated Tax To Be Collected: £0.00
Import Fees Deposit: £22.06
Order Total: £132.37

.. ^that summary is what it appears i will have to pay in total - although i dont know if tax/import fees will be added to the 132.37 figure.

i dont think i can get hold of those items new anywhere in the u.k. i have not really looked anywhere else other than google search/ebay/amazon.

would it be a good idea/of any help to select 'gift' and add a message of some kind even though i'm paying and items should be delivered to my address?

regards, cheers.

Details here. 'Gift' may not work as monies will be exchanged. And some carriers also charge an additional handling fee.

thanx for that info Inner.

''Buying goods from non-EU websites

Tax on goods from abroad

More about tax when ordering or sending goods from abroad

Tax on goods from abroad
If you buy goods over the internet or by mail order from outside the EU, you’ll have to pay VAT if the package is worth over £18.

If worth over £135, customs duty may also be due, although this will depend on what the goods are and where they've been sent from. However, if the actual amount of duty due is less than £9 this won’t be charged.

If someone sends you a gift in the post from outside the EU, import VAT will only be due if the package is worth over £40.

To qualify as a gift, the item must be sent from one private individual to another, with no money changing hands.''

..^so that kinda sums it up i guess. maybe it would be a good idea to buy each item (under £18) individually..

cheers.

Edit: then again, buying individually would probably mean paying more in postage overall, so would that work out actually costing more - than if buying all items in 1 bulk?

hmmm..
