We have just bought a Coleman Extreme cool box.  Can anyone give us any tips on the most effective way to load it to keep you food cool for the longest possible time.   Is it better to use the ice blocks or bags of ice?

We did try it at home yesterday but only had a few bottles of beer in it and used some ice cube bags, but after a day the ice had melted.  I know it would have worked better if we had more in it!

Thanks

Precool it with lots of ice then fill with frozen plastic bottles milk, water, juice etc. Bacon, sausages frozen. Ice cubes in bags or buy supermarket bags of ice go on top. (I prefer ice cubes to the blue blocks). Secret is to fully pack it and not to frequently open it, replace ice as needed or use blue blocks.

Yes everything you can freeze, freeze. Lots and lots of ice. Large chucks of ice last longer than small cubed ice. Blue freezer blocks, not much use for anything really, save your time and money and freeze empty squash bottles, milk cartons etc with water/juice/milk etc in them.

Keep coolbox out of sunlight and hot tents where possible.
Open as little as possible.
Ban children from going in there.
Top up with ice when the chance arises, ie in Tesco's doing the 'camp food shop'.
Don't put warm drinks like beer into coolbox (this melts a huge amount of ice just to get them down to 'temp'). Cover coolbox with fleece or wool blanket or old sleeping bag as the extra insulation extends cold retention. Some will say wet towel but if the internal temperature is well below that of the towel and water then it will do very little to help. This method works well over a bucket of water with beer in however. (I mess and test coolbox performance too much, I really need to get a life!)

Apart from that you can't go wrong really.

Ps, put everything in seal-able freezer bags, soggy cheese or broken eggs/ham etc isn't very nice floating around in the bottom of your coolbox!

Hope this helps somewhat,

Kind regards
Gareth

Agree with the above. Also pack it well, things I know won't be used for a few days go on the bottom, thin cool pack on top. Milk, spread etc on top.

Read on here to freeze a 3 litre bag out of a wine box, filled with water not wine! On our last trip we tried it and it was fantastic lasted for 4 days in our extreme box and when we got back it took a further day to fully defrost out of the box.

Cool the box first by putting 4 pint milk containers ( filled with water then frozen ) inside for a couple of days before use. Put ice blocks on top as cold air sinks . Had cold beer and food in mine for 5 days no problem . You do have to be anal in the way you use it but it is worth it .
