With an independent report in your possession it will be hard, if not illegal (Sale of Goods Act) for the retailer (not the manufacturer) to either replace or repair the item at their cost.

If as you say the poles aren't covered by a guarantee then your only recourse is the SoG Act and the case must be taken up with the retailer.
However, I think you will have no option than to obtain an independent report otherwise I feel you will be wasting your time.
Good Luck.

I wonder how much this report would cost from a qualified person.
If it was £170 would it have been worth it?
Unless it all got silly and went to court would those costs be covered by the manufacturer if the product was found to be faulty?
How much better for everyone if spares were available at a reasonable cost, that in this case the user was very ready to pay
edit - I've said more than enough now, sure I've bored people to tears.
Thanks for everyone's politeness and good manners.
cheers, John
