Topic: Cobb Cobblestones won`t light

On Saturday I bought two boxes of Cobble Stones for my Cobb from Lakeland (new stock just in). I tried them out this evening, and try as I might I couldn't get the bleeding things to light. If I held a gas lighter against the stone for several seconds it eventually just fizzles briefly and then goes out.

Maybe this was just a bad batch, and I intend returning them to Lakeland for a refund. But I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem lately? I've never had the Cobblestones before, so don't know how easy they are normally to light.

Ive been told that the newer batches have been made with a slightly different material, which means they are harder to light - I think Ive got this batch too! You could try putting a couple of twists of paper in the holes and lighting those. This is what Im planning on doing this weekend.

When I had ones that did not what to start I just put the basket on the gas cooker for a bit, that sorted them out.

Hmm, more like 'impossible to light'! But OK, maybe I'll try the paper idea tonight. To be honest though, I think I'm going to get my money back - these things are expensive and supposed to be self igniting. If they're this much trouble then I'd probably be better off getting some Aussie Heat Beads and firelighters.

Bought my first box a couple of months ago - used two, First one lit relatively easily, used the second one in the weeek, and ended up taking a cooks torch to it. Made mental note to myself to take the cooks torch away with me when we go.

I've just got some as well, and I had trouble. In the end I dropped a couple of lit matches down the holes and that did the trick. I couldn't do it with the bbq lighter thing we have at all. I think I might just light a firelighter in the base as I would with charcoal next time. As you say though, I shouldn't have to do that!

The jury's still out on the Cobb at the moment, and that didn't help its cause!

I'll try some firelighters tonight and see if I can get a Cobblestone to light. If it works OK I might keep them, as they are still more convenient than briquettes.

alisonme: I've been using the Cobb for years with heat bead type briquettes, and it's been brilliant. So don't let the dodgy Cobblestones put you off!

Finally got it to light using a firelighter cube under the cobblestone! Seems nice and hot now, and definitely more convenient than briquettes.

We lit our first cobb stone the other week - wow did it go!! Was really impressed.

Maybe a faulty batch!

I've never had much luck with the cobblestones. Usually end up using at least a dozen matches. I found the best way is to have a couple of lit matches in the bottom and gently place the basket on. But keeping the matches alight long enough is not easy.

On my last attempt I just set fire to some kitchen roll then put the basket on top....that worked!

Mine are a pain to light, I bought loads last year and thought that it was a faulty batch. The only way I can get them to light is with a cooks blowtorch, might try the kitchen roll trick though.

We had the same problem - i use a cotton wool ball with a tiny smear of vaseline , stick it under the basket and then light it, whack the basket with the cobblestone in on top and away it goes.
