Hi, Have read a few messages about fridges, but wondered if anyone had experience of 3-way portable fridges eg Dometic. In particular, using them on gas in a tent? Or is that completely unsafe?!!
Thanks!

I asked the same question in another thread, it was a bit off topic for that thread and went unanswered, so will be keen to see any recommendations here.

I would have said if you have a sig then no if you dont then still wouldn't fancy it myself,i guess it could be ok in the porch area but not sure i would even be happy with that, for me just not worth the risk the nearest i would get is in my folding camper awning,or my utility tent when i dont use the awning.

Hi, We use a Combicool CAB-40 3 way. We found this to be an excellent little fridge, and we've run it on gas for about eight years (so about 10 weeks including odd weekends here and there). We've also lent it out to friends. This year we treated ourselves to an electric hook-up, so we're using that now, but I have no worries about using it on gas. If anything, on gas it's a little TOO efficient, and will freeze anything left too close to the back of the unit, so be sure to set it to MIN. You can use the little shelf to freeze water in an ice tray! I have no worries about it's safety.

Sorry but i am going to follow this with a repeat i would worry about it in a tent, too late in the morning when you or your child is dead or brain damaged,no matter how small the source of fumes i wouldn't sleep with it running on gas in a tent, but to answer your other part of the question the dometic is a fantastic three way i have the one that goes to 30 below ambient

Thanks all - sounds like the Dometic combicool fridges work well, so will definitely get one. The thought of ice and cold milk - and no ice packs! - is good! But will use with caution - switch it off at night and only use if tent door is open in the day.
By the way, what is a ZIG/SIG?? 'scuse my ignorance!

as to the use of fridge why not get yourself a carbon monoxide detector to place in the tent, you will know if there is a problem then.

The CO emitted from a gas fridge would never reach concentrations within a tent (with or without SIG) to be a danger to health.

Tents are not airtight, even with vents etc closed. the recent stories posted on here were caused by flames and emission sources much larger than a pilot light used in a gas powered fridge.

If you purchase a "camping fridge" these days, which is gas powered, it will have been tested in all repsects for the use intended. i.e. use of the gas inside a tent. Knowing the UK, they will have OVER tested it.

Each to their own though - if you don't like it, then don't use it.
