My FIL has just been round and given me his great grandmothers cast iron griddle !!!!! So now I don't have to buy one for campfire cooking. Question is.. its been in storage for quite some time, what do I need to do to get it perfect for cooking on?

I would suggest oven cleaner spay, a couple of times then a good wash in soapy water, Dry it or it may go rusty.
This is a very sturdy implement and the potential for damaging it is low. Just keep it clean and hygienic.
Brillo pads will not damage it and could be used every now and again to keep it up to spec. Remember they did not have the modern cleaning gear we have back in those days.

I wouldn't go anywhere near it with oven cleaner!

Inspect the seasoning first. Is it rusty? If not the seasoning might be in good order. You could ruin a 100 year old seasoning if you touch it with any detergent!

No water or detergent!!! Brush it over to get it clean and re-seasoning won't hurt. The high heat they are exposed to keeps them "hygienic". What a lovely present!

Well I have just tried out the griddle and it needs seasoning. Obviously been in storage a little too long. So what is the best way to do it?

If you do a search on youtube, you will find tons of clips telling you how to clean and season cast iron cookware.  Most of them are American as our neighbours across the pond view all Teflon/ nonstick coated pans we use here with great suspicion!

I'm a bit on a convert to cast iron but it does need a little extra care and def  no detergents or cleaners!
