Hi Guys

Been looking at the B40 for use in my awning on electric.

I am looking to find out how good they are at freezing food and using it more as a freezer when on site than jut a cooler. The info on most website sites says it can freeze, but how good a job does it do ???

Also if its does freeze and you use it for a week or two, does it have a build up of ice inside ? How quickly does it defrost ?

Anyone used it to this extent ???

We've used ours as a cooler only for drinks in the awning.  Bought it at the start of the summer holiday and as a cooler it is excellent.  Haven't switched our up to maximum for freezing other than a quick try when we first switched it on, it was well cold within half an hour and a can of coke was beginning to form some ice after about an hour.  I think it seems to get colder the more stuff you put in it, so you adjust the control knob.

The fridge is not particularly dependant on the ambient temperature (most camping fridges are dependant), but I suppose it's bound to be effected in some way.  After saying that, my guess is that it would suffice as a freezer in the UK, but perhaps one would need to monitor it if you went to the Mediterranean.

I stress that we have not really used it as a freezer, but my comments are based upon the way I feel the unit is performing.  I honestly don't think you will get anything any better for the price.  It does produce a tiny film of ice, if I switch it slightly higher, but it has not left water in the bottom.  Since coming home from holiday (we were away for almost 5 weeks) I have left it switched on in the study and it had taken the pressure off the main fridge - we've continued to use it for drinks.

If you use it in the car through the 12v cigarette lighter it will not specifically act as a freezer, but will keep contents about 20C below the ambient temperature.  We have found this is sufficient for travelling.  If you stoke up the fridge well, before your journey (and with ice packs) it may well keep food frozen if you keep the fridge packed full of stuff.  I do find it is quite heavy to carry - really heavy when full, IMHO.

Would I buy the unit again?  Most definitely.  Much better and much more efficient than our previous awning fridge.  Hope this helps - sorry we have not really used it as a freezer, so have been a bit cautious with my remarks.

Best wishes

David/Dean

Very comprehensive David and thanks for your view, glad to see its doing a good job so far. I think it will do what I am after, lets see if anyone else has had a freeze experience with it.

Dean - I had seen that link/thread but it did not give me the info I was really after, but thanks anyway.

Cheers

If you are interested, the cheapest i can find is at Towsure.  I thought I got a good deal when I bought mine in July for £199.  They've knocked another tenner off now.  This is a brilliant price - £189.99.  See here.  Wow!
