As long as the tent is well ventilated, you should have no problems. Where possible, I use a small chain, to hang it from the ceiling, as well as having it on a table, so if the table gets knocked for any reason, the light can't fall.

PS if you'r worried about fumes, get a detector. They can cost less than £20

We have two CampinGaz lanterns, but I would never dream of using them inside the tent.

There are plenty of Cree LED lanterns around today, google 400 Lumen or 300 Lumen lantern, they are not as bright as a CampinGaz latern, which is the eqivelent of a 80watt lightbulb (old money), the Cree lanterns get to about 30watt at best.

For the main light in our tent we use a 150 LED (not Cree!) awning light, that can run of 12v or mains. and gives of around 75watt equivelent.

I new someone else would come along and say that, so now you're back to square one.  I would say that as you are worried about it, then use battery.

I have been using paraffin and gas lights as well as cookers both pressure paraffin and gas and petrol, since about 1960, and I'm still here. Having said that, my dad was in the RAF during WW2. His crew all survived, then one killed himself using a petrol stove making a cup of tea whilst waiting to fly home.

Gas lights here allways have. I'm assuming your not intending to use it in a small backpacking tent . Then you'll be fine I've used gas lights in small tents and even held between my knees in the back of an old Morris miner -15 and no working heater . We use them in the house when there's a power cut . We have two gas lights and a petrol lantern we allways use gas lights when camping with our kids even in our quite small vango .
If they weren't safe you couldn't buy them and regards the recent deaths they were due to charcoal BBQ's that are never intended for use in doors . Deaths that were due to a lack of education not a dangerous BBQs or poorly designed tents .

I use my camping gaz lumostar lamp inside my frame tent (so plenty of room) for an hour or so in the evenings. I love the sound it makes and also it gives off a bit of warmth. We are always very careful with it though. The LED lanterns are fine, I use them in the sleeping pods but you cannot beat a gas lantern (IMHO). I don't think I would use one in a small tent and also not with small children.

we use a lumostar.  we put a double ended dog clip onthe metal handle and suspend it from the hanger in the centre of the tent. it takes the nip out of th air , and as long as you have adequate ventilation CO poisoning isn't an issue.

Makes you wonder how so many of us old codgers survived, doesn't it.  When I started camping in 1952, we used petrol or primus stoves and hurricane lamps as they were pretty much all we could get  I remember how excited we were when my Dad got a gas lantern - and I still have it and it still works!

While this tragedy appears to have been the result of an incorrectly fitted globe, it is worth bearing in mind just how dangerous carbon monoxide is.

Mr Scarecrow, you are so knowledgeable about all things camping... but tell us please, how is your Combine Harvester standing up to all the hard work of late?
