We currently have a towbar fitted on our car but are getting a new car next week. Same make and model but different year so not sure if we can re use the same towbar.

Hubby is happy to leave the towbar on our old car but I'd like to remove it, even if we can't use it, we can either sell or pass on.

How easy are they to remove?

Should be easy enough to remove.

Usually when a tow bar is fitted, a strengthening beam is removed and replaced by the tow bar frame. This is part of the crash protection structure of the car.

I assume you will replace this, or would be happy to sell a vehicle where the safety of the occupants will be seriously compromised?

Just a thought.

No idea where the beam is so doubt if we could replace it.

But we are part exchanging the car so I'd assume that the garage would notice if this needed doing when they service it before selling on.

We left the towbar on our last vehicle and the garage sold it on without the towbar so if we don't remove it I guess they will.

It might involve removing rear bumper & you will need good sockets & probably a 2 foot breaker bar because the bolts holding the towbar will be tight. If you remove it you do need to refit any crash protection that was removed to fit towbar.

We had someone come do it so I don't know what happened to anything removed.

Hubby is going to ring them Monday and see if they will remove it and what the charge will be.

What vehicle is it we're discussing?
IF a strengthening beam has been removed and you don't have it, then I certainly wouldn't remove the towbar as your seriously compromising the strength of the vehicle; regardless of whether your selling this on or not, it could well be overlooked during a pre-sale service too.

Unless you can use it again, it maybe simply not worth it either.

Remember too, when getting towbar fitted to new car, make sure you keep any strengthening bar that maybe removed during the install.

There were instructions available on the Witter website for installation,these showed you whether a beam is fitted or not.Can't see them on there anymore,but they will be available somewhere.

hi so long as your getting the same shape zafira ie model change arround 2005 your bar will fit. you dont disgard any part of the impact aborber when you fit the tow bar so no problem there. quite easy to remove and fit just remove rear bumper and away you go. just remember to remove the captive nuts that twist into the rear chassis legs to re-use in your new car (i didnt once and had to buy a new bolt kit) .

buy the way i am a sado and have had 4 zafiras and put tow bars on all 4 if you need any more info just ask.

We currently have a 2003 model and will be getting a 2007 so not sure if it will still fit.

Hubby hates DIY and we have been quoted £30 to remove the towbar. If this will fit the new one great, but if not then we wouldn't sell it for any more than that so not worth paying.
