Hi... Im going to take my darling daughters (3 and 4 yrs old) camping very soon.. I have snuggly sleeping bags and a fan heater, so in the tent is no problem.. Im after a warm warterproof coat for them both... They always complain about the cold when we go to our local beach with the mutt.. I normally buy them a fancy winter coat from Marks and Spencer for school.. Ive never needed a hardcore winter coat for them in the past.. Can anyone suggest a cheap warm waterproof coat?.. they seem soooo expensive

I have checked and found Regetta makes 3-in-1 waterproof jackets for children.

Found them via this link:

Regetta Children's 3-in-1 Waterproof Jackets

A 3-in-1 jacket comes with a outer shell and a fleece inner.

One can wear the outer shell or the fleece on its own when it is not so cold or wet, or combined as one for colder wetter days.

I like 3-in-1 jackets as they are very versatile.

As for keeping warm, I prefer to dress in layers, rather than to rely on just one thick coat.

When I go camping in winter months, I would wear a thermal base layer, then normal clothes over it, then a fleece, then the waterproof outer. If it rains, I would add a pair of waterproof over-trousers.

ather than a coat (unless you are going to get plenty of addtional use out of it) I would go for layers - that way you can adjust to suit the weather.

We had some great Trespass ones from Winfields that were heavily discounted. Have had Regatta in the past and they are also good, try the Regatta Outlet store for discounted stuff.

What about a simple pac-a-mac over a fleece rather than a 3 in 1 coat? You can get cheap pac-a-macs from places like Matalan or charity shops and then layer up underneath with jumpers and fleeces. Pac-a-macs can be quite warm on their own.

Check ebay - second hand ski/snowboarding jackets - Roxy/quicksilver, amongst others, do loads of stuff for younger kids and there are often bargains to be had. My kids wear this stuff every year and I always get right proper bargains for about a tenner.

oooh dear! Just went to the Regatta place mentioned and bought a new jacket for myself!! However, I have been looking for a regatta coat for ages, saw one in the charity shop (but not a winter weight one) for £12... this brand new and winter weight has cost just £16! The postage is extra but I found a code - TB12 - and that gave me a further 10% so altogether only came to £18.35 with postage. That's for a jacket that should be £40!

Thanks Clunty!

We got our youngest two girls some Tog24 3 in 1's, they are versitile and very well made, my five year old wears hers for school too. They were about £30. Don't go into their high street stores tho, they have lots of shops with knocked down prices, like one on Hornsea Freeport or Designer Outlet places.

I would also recommend Regatta. All excellent coats of different styles...some are just thin waterproofs and fold into their own bag and others are thick and warm without being too bulky. Good quality coats (sealed seams etc.) at sensible prices and do what they say on the tin.
