Can anyone advise on the best and most affordable way of taking the chill out of winter camping (tent). Have a reluctant wife who doesn't seem too excited about camping out of season. Although with suitable sleeping bags I can't see the problem.

Have seen the coleman blackcat heater but at £50.00 would really like some feedback on whether this is an essential.

Hi Suggs, welcome to UKCS. We use electric hook-up and small heater. Also a Tilley lamp which produces quite a bit of heat as well as light.

Either that or I can come round and rub her for you.LOL

I can't see the problem either if as you say you have a good sleeping bag. Obviously a nice warm and cosy pub nearby with a log fire and a selection of fine ales helps too! A heater may be worthwhile to take the chill off on return from the pub and will get you brownie points if nothing else. Not used one myself though, but I camp March - October so never needed one (we've been youth hostelling over the winter months).

Hi Suggs and welcome to the Funny Farm(you've met the resident joker). Like Breezy says we use an EHU and a heater,in our case a halogen heater, also got a small gas one incase of no hook up. But like liz says a good pub with log fire sounds nice, pity I can't remember what a pub looks like,(two young kids).

You lot don't hang around, great to receive advise in such a short time.

Suppose can always opt for thermals, but the pub does sound more inviting.

Last year I found my Sunncamp gas fire a godsend.  Really took the chill of the tent - and had a lovely pyschological effect when the rain was exceptionally heavy. OK it rained most days that week - nut there was one evening and one full day when it was really bad - having the fire made it seem a lot better.

When in the tent we had a sunncamp gas fire when there was no hook-up or a small fan heater when there was.  We found the coldest time was when we were getting up and had to leave our bags.

Lol @ breezy!

We also use our cobb for heating as 5 brickets last 5-6 hours.  Cobb is also safe to have lit in a tent and it does not smoke after the first 15 mins.

Hi there suggs welcome we have a black cat heater its very good they are cheaper than £50 if you shop around on internet and camping shops ect. We also went for an electric hook up and got a nice cheap halogen heater and that is marvalous, my other half hates the cold to but she loves it when we are all set up and the fires on in tent, its another world hope you have a great time,

Dont know about having it in tent!!! seems a bit dangerous but not having a cobb will take it from the experts,

Ta for all the ideas, all I need to do now is talk the missus into it. If all else fails I can tell her we can rely on good old body heat.

Probably going on my own then!!

My blackcat heater is so good, I almost hope for cold weather when I go camping, well almost, not quite, but its lovely and cosy.  I was reading a book about the home front the other day, (see Eden Camp meet thread, need ideas for fancy dress), and they used to use a candle under an upturned plant pot for heating the anderson shelter!!  What about that for a cheap tent heater??  May be not effective, or may be unsafe, don't know, someone round here will.
