After much advise from UKCampsite I have decided my next two purchases will be the double sided griddle for my camping gaz stove and the Quechua Tarp.

I believe the Tarp comes with 2 poles about 5'7", is that right? Where would i get extra and taller poles for it?

I can't wait to try the Quecha tarp I got for Christmas  - that's the only reason I'm going camping in February (kidding!)

I think I'm going to use the two poles that came with it on the front two corners and a taller one on the middle at the front with the rest of the tarp then fitting round the top of the tent. I might change my mind when I get there but in my head it looks like it will work. My other poles are 6' so I might be tempted to buy a 7' one when I get back but I'll see how I get on first.

I have two poles with my tarp and another two porch poles from another tent. Both sets are different heights but I like that. I have found the most stable is with only using three, two centre middle for a ridge shape - then the third, shorter one on the front corner. This gives an 'entry' point, while still giving loads of shelter. I pitch it up close to the front of the tent, not over the tent. I found it wouldn't stay when pitched over the tent, it kept popping off with the wind.

We bought a tarp from Millets this year and used their poles and the ones from the tent for the front door. Since we were attaching the tarp to the side of the tent we didn't need to open the front - worked perfectly.

Anyone got any pics of tarps in position - it could save me a whole lot of embarrassment as I try to wrestle mine into place next month (although there probably won't be that many other campers there to laugh at me...)

Hi Karen. The method you described with a third pole, works excellently. Used this method on a tatonka tarp over a bell tent and that extra, taller pole, kept the tarp taught like a drum. Havnt got a picture of the extra pole setup, I took photos before I used the extra pole. Have a look at the photos in the 5m standard bell tent review. You'll see that an extra pole in the centre will make all the difference. Worked for me.

If you have a look at the bottom of This post you can see some good ideas.

Thank you both, I might not make a complete fool of myself then. Liking the idea of using the windbreak as well - I wasn't even going to bother taking it but I think I will now.

I wouldn't worry what other people think Kar.en, it'll be obvious you're just 'playing' with your new piece of kit.

I found that it was just a matter of experimenting. I really enjoyed finding out how to put it up and since I haven't used it that much it's something I look forward to playing with this year again. A tarp and windbreak combo is great for cooking under too, a bit like a gazebo only an awful lot easier to get in the car!

That's exactly what I'm going to use it for Victoria - hoping it will work really well with the Carolina as I'm sure I'll need some kind of shelter in February!
