Hi Iwonder if anyone has any advice or knows of some innovative piece of equipment I can aquire.....................................................................

I have 12 month old twins and am struggling to think of how to keep them safe in bed in our caravan.

We have triple bunks and a make up single in addition to the front double.

The bottom bunk can be used no problem as it is almost ground level and we can put a duvet on the floor incase of a roll out, but what can I do with the other child??

We've tried them sharing and it doesn't work.

The guards which are built in aren't high enough as my boys are climbers.

Can't think of how to rail off either the middle bunk or the single make up bed

We can't be the only people to take small children caravanning so thought i'd see what others do...........................

Thanks for any advice

Im not sure weather this would work in a caravan . But i know there are net barriers for use in sailing boat bunks . I think ive seen them for sale on Force4 chandlery site .

How about the nets you can get to go across the hi-cab beds of motorhomes?
Something like this:

I went caravanning from when I was 6 weeks old (40 years ago now!!!) there were no such thing as bed guards back then so my dad made his own type of bed guard/rail that slotted into the side of the bunk each night to stop me falling off, it was very basic but did the trick most of the time - I did fall off the top bunk a few times and suprisinlgy stayed asleep on the majority of occasions, always totally unhurt.

Only a suggestion but it might be worth keeping it simple and see if there is anything you can make/adapt for the first couple of occasions rather than spending loads of money on things which may not do the job.

We found that a travel cot was unlikely to fit in our van. We had the double bed at rear setup with a door that went across so all we did was make this bed up put a couple of cushions on the bed and then close the door. He went into a bunk when he was 2 as we sold the last van. Good luck you may have to adapt for a while or put a ready bed on the floor next to the bottom bunk.

We used a Hauck travel cot as it was the smallest we could find- it fitted neatly in our Sprite Musketeer, we then moved onto some foam wedges- I will try and find the link to them which were also brill and the lady was extremely helpful on cutting the right length- http://www.bed-guards.co.uk/ this year we are going to try a folding bed guard- we got one from Lidl which seems to be the right size as they do vary in fit and height quite alot. It really depends how much your baby moves around! We did try a samsonite pop up but ours manged to roll it along like he was inside a barrel so not much use really.

When you had the twins in the same bed, were they side by side? i would have thought you could sleep them at one at each end, feet to the middle and make the bed up so that you put down the bottom sheet and fold it back on itself to become the top sheet. This stops them slithering down the bed and under the covers. You should have enough room to put a bolster between their feet so that they are not really aware of each other - a cheap pillow rolled up and tied up with string would do the trick.

Try

http://www.kiddicare.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/productdisplayA_168_10751_-1_14700_13514_10001_

or just google images - bedguard and loads of them will appear for you to look at. You could use 2 so the entire length of the bed was secure or, with a bit of thought you could make one of your own that would fit.

Thank you so much everyone for your replys and tips.

Travel cots wouldn't fit in the van and there is no way they can share a bed now as they are too full of carry on!!!

I had a look at the overhead bunk netHEJC72 and have ordered one to try it. If it fits ok I'll order another.

Getting excited now as we've chosen a site for the season and can't wait to get away.

Thanks again everyone

Scotchie.. i would be very interested to know if the cargo net approach works!
we have a little boy of nearly 4 who will have to sleep in the top fold up bunk of our newly purchased motorhome.
it is not that he might roll out that is so much the problem, more that he will lean up against whatever guard is there. he has special needs and sleep issues, so this can be at 3am! although we would get to him pretty quickly, i am sure he would topple over the top of the lindam bedguard type effects!!
please let me know!!...
thanks

Hi Tina,

We will be trying these out for the first time this weekend (easter) so I will let you know.

We fitted them and they look like they will work well. The only problem we had was there was not enough height to fix the straps to the bunk above so my hubby used some tie wraps and fixed them to the bunk above that( not sure if i've explained that well??)

Looks like they would definately hold your son in as the fixings are secure and the material is nice and strong.

I'll let you know how we get on

Arlene
