Hello all, I am looking for some help.

I am after a tow bar mounted box which, in addition to my roof box, will carry my ever expanding collection of camping gear.

I know of the thule back up box and easy base system, which is the kind of thing I am after. However, as you may know, these are expensive, approx £400 for both, and one is no good without the other.

I am sure I saw a reference to another box, which fits straight onto the tow bar, without the need for a "base", on one of these message forums, but it would have been last summer, so I can no longer find it.

Can anyone help, or suggest alternative storage options. I don't want a trailer, as we live in a terraced house, and we are put off by the increase in tunnel costs.

Thanks.

 Hi

I some times use an easybase with a garden box strapped to it, it's one of those boxes that you see in gardens centres for storing garden chairs and such. Also I sometimes use the easybase for carting stuff up the tip that I don't want in the car.     Hope that helps

Well back in July 2009, we used a Thule BackUp Box 900, we already had a Thule EuroClassic 902 Pro 2+1 towbar mounted, Bike carrier, onto which the BackUp Box fits perfectly.

It seemed a good idea at the time, and the BackUp Box, was a customer return bargain, from The RoofBox Co. and cost £145.

So we loaded up, and set of on the 900 mile journey to our holiday destination in the Southern Ardeche, for a fortnight campings.

The problem we had was two fold, firstly the BackUp Box could only hold 50kg, because the base weighed 25Kg, which adds up to the 75kg max nose weight of the Mk6 VW Golf that I drive.

Also with the car being fully loaded, with the rest of our camping kit, the car felt all at sea for the journey, there were some very strange noise's comming from the car, and the rear tyres had all but dissapeared up into the wheel arches.

When we returned from holiday, and with the car now empty, it never rgained it's rear height!, I guess the rear springs had been jiggered, as I had not used any springs assisters, thankfully it was a firms car, and was replaced later that year.

We sold the BackUp Box, to someone on here for £90, who had a far more suitable vehicle.

We still use the Bike Carrier, as that is a truly great piece of kit, and so is the BackUp Box, for that matter, but only on the relevent vehicle.

Not got a box but we do have a BAKRAK that sits on the towbar, OH wraps tent bag etc in heavy plastic and then ties all on, works really well, gives us more boot space, not as expensive as anything by Thule but solid and well made

Thanks Francais - I have heard similar stories. HappyCamper95 - Bakrak was the brand I had seen earlier. Good prices but I am now slighty fearful of overloading. I am now looking at small trailers - narrow enough enough to fit down our side passage.
