The ground sheet goes over the mud flaps but it would not make much difference especially in a tent with a sig or a footprint. If you look at the bottom of the picture we had a piece of rubber backed carpet in the doorway on top of the groundsheet and that's what the pitch looked like when we got there, rather dead and it stayed the same under the mat.
We did have a few down pours that holiday so the ground was quite wet but not as bad as the year before on the same site lots of people were putting plastic sheeting under as everything turned to mud and the smell was awful when it was taken up again.Ours was not too bad as we had concrete runners for a motor home just to the right of the picture so the car did not churn the ground up.
In those circumstances anyone in a tent with just a breathable sheet down would have had to abandon the tent,at least we do not live in the awning and have a choice of doorways and can move things around to keep dry.
