I have a Vango Columbia 600 with a sewn in groundsheet. I have booked a week's camping in Lincolnshire and the owner rang me today to ask if we could use a breathable groundsheet as they have spent a fortune on the grass. Fair enough,I appreciate that, but how do I know if mine is breathable? and does it mean I won't be able to use a footprint? I feel a bit of a numpty asking but I would appreciate any advice. Thank you.

A breathable groundsheet will make no difference under a tent with a SIG. Breathable groundsheets are normally used in Caravan Awnings. I would call back and talk to the owner

Have contacted the owner who has suggested using a breathable ground sheet under SIG, but as I haven't got one not to worry.

That seems very strange, and not worth doing, breathable under a groundsheet. Seems to defeat the object - any grass growing experts ?

It does seem to defeat the object I agree, but when I spoke to the owner it was suggested that it would put a layer between tent and grass.

Waste of time, this was our pitch in Cornwall after 2 weeks. We use a breathable groundsheet and the white area around the edges is where the mud flap was.

When we arrived there was very little grass where the awning goes on the pitch so it was in better condition when we left which is why we took the picture.

The problem these days is that sites tend to fill all the space they can and not give the grass time to recover, one site owner told us that he does not mind seeing worn out pitches as it means they have been full.

No but the mud flap is waterproof which stopped the grass growing around the edges.

Did you tuck the mud flaps under or over the breathable ground sheet?

The ground sheet goes over the mud flaps but it would not make much difference especially in a tent with a sig or a footprint. If you look at the bottom of the picture we had a piece of rubber backed carpet in the doorway on top of the groundsheet and that's what the pitch looked like when we got there, rather dead and it stayed the same under the mat.

We did have a few down pours that holiday so the ground was quite wet but not as bad as the year before on the same site lots of people were putting plastic sheeting under as everything turned to mud and the smell was awful when it was taken up again.Ours was not too bad as we had concrete runners for a motor home just to the right of the picture so the car did not churn the ground up.

In those circumstances anyone in a tent with just a breathable sheet down would have had to abandon the tent,at least we do not live in the awning and have a choice of doorways and can move things around to keep dry.
