We (family of 5) are planning to attend a number of caravan rallies this year that will not have EHU. Our 85ah leisure battery normally does us ok for the usual 2 nights away but we now require something that will last us up to 7 nights without ehu.

We're not looking to run a tv for hours on end. Rather, we want something that will ensure we can run lights and water pump, as well as occasionally charge a Nintendo DS.

Would greatly appreciate advice on the best (cost effective and DIY friendly) solar panel(s) that might meet our needs.

Detail on appropriate wattage would be great also, as I honestly don't know where to start.

Many thanks in advance for advice provided.

We have been rallying for a few years and have a Honda EX650 generator to keep my leisure battery topped up but the downside is that if we leave or move on to a site with EHU then it's an extra weight load I could do without really. I have been considering buying a solar panel myself to use at rallies and although I have a 13 watt briefcase solar panel it only charges 1 amp per hour and that's only in daylight hours on a bright day which is insufficient for a 110ah battery. Your consumption sounds identical to ours which is the pump and lighting be we have a manual flush toilet which doesn't use any battery power like the Thetford 12 volt flush toilets do, so you have to account for this is you have an electric flush loo fitted. Some people advise that I need a minimum of a 40 watt solar panel then others say it's not big enough and require an 80 watt which is twice the size so I'm a bit in the dark about this as much as you are. It's not worth spending large sums of money on a solar panel only to find out that I should have bought a bigger one. I hope someone can help because this is a good thread and hope someone who is an expert can explain exactly what size solar panel is needed to keep the battery charged for a week or more.

I've written some advice here on batteries and solar panels...

http://www.glenp.org.uk/batteriesfaq.htm

This is taken from experience and research, but usual disclaimers apply!

I have to say that I would expect an 85Ah battery to last around a week if you're not silly with the usage.

I use a 13w briefcase solar panel which is more than enough to top my battery up.
I only had to use a battery charger once during last season.
I have a small caravan and run 2 LED strip lights and mobile phone/DS chargers through an invertor.

In my old 'van 1990 I could manage indefinitely with a 65amp battery and a 30W solar panel but in my 2010 'van I need an 80W panel and a 110amp battery so I guess it depends a lot on what drain you are putting on the system taking into account that fridges, alarms, heating etc all require battery power of varying degrees.

You can pick up an 80W panel and a charge regulator for about £100 if you shop about a bit. Try to avoid an installation using croc clips from the panel as you will struggle to get them on in most battery lockers and you are introducing a point of high resistance. I fitted my regulator under the bunk and connected back to the feed from the charger to the battery. Connections from the panels are standard solar panel MC4 connectors which enable me to daisy chain panels should I require more than one and the regulator is sized to take the extra load. It makes a neat and simple system and enables me to place the panel where it catches the most sun. I've not tried it for extended periods in the winter and it may be that an additional battery and panel would be needed to cater for prolonged periods of low light levels.

Have you rallied for 7 days/nights before? A couple of nights without EHU is easily covered, but 7 nights bearing in mind that you may have children? can be quite a challenge; especially when you factor in our famous weather!

It really depends on how you and your family/travelling party relax chez caravan. Each of the contributors here will offer slightly diferent advice because we all want/need/aspire to slightly different entertainment during the course of a day/week.

If you are happy with no or at least very little tv during your rallies, irrespective of weather or 'must see programs' (Olympics perhaps if you are sports minded) then you may be able to 'get-away' with a lower wattage solar panel. (For tv, substitute  radio, laptop, games console, slow cooker etc although the latter would need an inverter).

The use of these items heavily draw on the battery and over a sustained period of time, a lower wattage panel wouyld not be up to the task.

Glen P's article and link is an excellent review based on experience: not what the salesperson wants you to hear!

From looking at solar panels at the Excel camping and caravanning show, a very rough guide to the maximum output of a panel equates to each 10w panel size will return approximately .6 amp/hr charging capability. Therefore, a 60w panel, under ideal circumstances will return approximately 3.6 amp/hr charge. Factor in cloud, shadow, less than ideal conditions, sun rising/setting etc etc and your average hourly charging rate may be considerably less. You may get somewhere near the advertised rate perhaps two hours before and after the sun is at its zenith, but each hour before and after this critical point will show a commensurate reduction in the panels capabilities. I refer you to Glens article again.

Personally, I would rather pay slightly more for a seemingly oversized panel (in terms of wattage rather than sheer physical dimensions) to allow for all of the potential limitations listed above. After all, if the panel is only producing 20% of its capacity, then 20% of 7.2 amps or above is far better than 20% of 3.6 amps. The difference may make the difference between 'surviving' a week away and enjoying a relaxing break!

Thanks for all the posts. Advice and recommendations are greatly appreciated, and I am truly impressed by the depth of technical knowledge.

In terms of my needs and uses I have 3 kids all under 9 so they do have their Nintendos and a small rechargeable DVD player that they use in the caravan. We don't always bring the portable tv so that's not a must.

We would go away with our local Camping & Caravanning Club so some sites where there is no EHU or shower facilities. Therefore we would rely on the water pump a bit. However, in terms of lighting, we would tend to only use 2 or 3 of the small spotlights for reading...

Hadn't really considered before now the possibility of upgrading my battery from 85ah to 110ah and using say a 13watt trickle charger. Food for thought!

Thanks again for all the helpful posts.

My 80ah battery was kept fully charged last year for a week at a time on none electric camping and caravan club holiday sites. It powered a 19" LED TV & Sat, Laptop charger, folding camper internal lights, awning light and 12v gas propex heater which was used occasionally on a night when it was chilly in my folding camper. Its an 80w solar panel & charge controller, the panel I mount on the roof when camping and remove it when towing and store it on the beds. It can be seen mounted on the roof in the following picture.

Hi, We run 2 x 80W panels into a 110Ah battery and never had any issues at all and we do run quiet a bit of kit off it. However, I have just got my hands on one of these http://www.maplin.co.uk/12v-50w-telescopic-vertical-axis-wind-turbine-396269 which if it works as I hope will mean I will be able to keep charging even when its dark, wind permitting that is.

Just out of interest(nosey),can these solar panels be used when camping as apposed to caravanning? We don't use EHU and have battery usb charger/solar phone charger but would it be possible to use a panel? or does it have to be connected to a battery?

Hmmm, See your point Nigel 16, hadnt looked at the reviews until you said about them. I was given the unit by a friend who had planned to use it on his motorhome but he ended up selling the motorhome before he fitted the unit.

Oh well, im going to give it a go anyway and see how I get on.

Dave
