It might be worth looking at some decent SIMs, rather than inflatable airbeds?

In the long run probably not

The airbeds are notorious for lasting a couple of trips max and you end up lying awake on a squashed marshmallow, the SIMS are a lot more robust

You need to get some which are a decent thickness though (perhaps spend more on yours than the kids, as they prob wont notice!)

Initial outlay will be more, but your bed is one of the items worth spending as much as you can max on

(I have 7.5cm thickness)

If at the moment you're just testing the water to see if you like camping, go with the cheapest - you can always upgrade gradually

Also I would hold on the sleeping bags till after your first trip - just use duvets from home

I agree with avoiding airbeds(personally hate em,pumping them up in the middle of the night),sims or campbeds..we have campbeds and love em.

Chairs...depends how long you want to spend blowing it all up,if it's your first time(which am assuming it is) imo would go for ordinary camping chairs or moonchairs.

We have the campingaz double burner and grill which has served us well for over 5 years without problems.

As Val says,if you are just testing the water then duvets are fine...if you are taking camping up seriously then sleeping bags are like shoes..if you're not in one you're in the other...so you want the best you can afford.

duvets can be warmer than sleeping bags, unless you are buying the more expensive quality ones, but if going in cooler weather with the duvets, make sure you take something warm to lie on too.  Cheap fleeces under your sheet really make a difference to warmth.

I too would avoid airbeds after one of mine developed a leak mid trip over Christmas.

Just bought my camp bed, and shall add a SIM next month.

I appreciate it is easy to say buy the best and only buy it once while it is not always possible for everyone to do that financially.

However, I do believe that is true, as well-build gears will last longer. I have had cheapo camping chairs from garages/services, and they did not last more than a couple of trips!

Have fun and enjoy your first season.

,won't sleep on her own??? camping is the only time I get a decent nights sleep..and that's sharing my sleeping bag with the dog...don't ask!...I think kampa do a double campbed as did Outwell, but finding an outwell is like needle in a haystack job(i know, ive tried). Just google double campbeds. or double sims..or if you really want to go upmarket..aerobeds,but then you need ehu (I think they have built in electric pumps, but couldnt swear to it).You could of course get two singles and put them together.

it's difficult because if you get cheap then you could be uncomfortable and hate it,vowing never to camp again, but then buying the best costs an arm and a leg,and since it's your first season you can't be absolutely sure you will like it...

Hi,

We just started camping last year, and because I didn't want to spend a fortune until I was sure we liked it, and because it took a while to persuade the OH that it was a good idea, we ended up with a double height airbed. He said it felt more like going to bed and less like sleeping on the floor, and to be honest, we didn't have any problems with it. Yes, it needed a bit more air putting in every couple of days, but it was our bed for two weeks and it served us well. I may investigate spending more and going for camp beds or sims in the future, but for now, the airbed is doing just fine :-) We also just took our duvet from home, as when we invest in sleeping bags I want to buy good ones, and plenty of cheap fleecy blankets although we were never cold. If you can borrow stuff off anyone else it might be a good idea for your first couple of trips - that's what we did. Whatever you do, I am sure you will have a great time - it's all part of the adventure :-)

Happy Camping!

Kate.
