Hi

Going round in circles!

We are coming back to camping this year after a break whilst the kids we're babies. We are usually a family of 4 but sometimes a family of 6 when DH teenagers join us.

We are keen cooks and whilst I don't want to spend hours prepping food on holiday, I do want us to eat well.

And I'm going round in circles trying to figure out what kit will work for us!

I thought I was there with a cadac carri chef deluxe but I'm not so sure. Ive read a lot about the skottel being a pain to clean and the paella pan looks too big for when there are 4 of us.

I've got the campervan cookbook and a couple of others that boast you can cook everything in them on 2 rings. We have a 2 ring Tilley with grill.

The cadac is expensive and I'm worried that we will end up using it as we would a BBQ and opt for the Tilley and our good fring pan for sized and ease of cleaning. But then again the cadac seems to offer an oven capability......

As you can see, I'm going round in circles!

Any words of wisdom?

I'll be taking my Coleman 424 Dual Fuel 2-Burner stove, a Coleman Dual Fuel Sportster stove, and a Coleman F1 Spirit stove, plus a Weber Go Anywhere BBQ with me from now on.

The Sportster is a spare in case I need it. It was purchased with winter camping in mind before I treated myself to the Coleman 424 in time for camping over Christmas 2011, as I know from experience that suitcase stoves that use butane and my Cadac Safari Chef HP will be ineffective at sub-zero temperatures.

The F1 was "the" spare of choice as I already carry a small cannister of gas for the F1 lantern.

For the past 2 trips in Dec 2011 and Feb 2012, I only needed to use the Coleman 424 to cook myself some very nice meals.

I think you have hit it "what works for you". After several seasons we have settled on the following having used many different appliances.

For breakfast (mainly)we use an electric griddle plate it was less than £20 (£16.99) it has a thermostat and adjustable heating. Dead easy to clean (just wipe with kitchen roll).

For Evening meals (we tend to eat out midday) if the weather is reasonable we use a Weber Go Anywhere BBQ plus a halogen oven for baked potatoes (it will cook almost anything) less than £30 when new. I believe the Weber is no longer available though there is one on ebay currently. In addition we have an induction hob and a cheap Cadac as back-up.

Been there and done that too. Started off with a 'proper' 2 burner with grill + stand + butane cylinder. Takes up too much room in car and in storage. I now use a campingaz party grille and an uno stove. I know I have to get two different gas cartridges and the gas is more expensive, but the convenience wins for me and I'm unlikely to run out of both kinds of gas. (fingers crossed)

2 of us plus our grown-up stepson sometimes, and we take a small collapsible BBQ (to use as a fire later on after cooking) and a CampingGaz 1 burner, which goes on a table or bricks if there are any lying about. If it can't be cooked on either of these, we don't bother with it, and it makes packing a doddle.

Mind you, I am mega-prepared and beforehand I prep all meat & package in tinfoil, cook potatoes & prepare salad, and put them in bags etc. Breakfast is normally bacon sarnies, lunch is 'out' or cold meats & salad, and supper is BBQ chicken or steak or homemade burgers (can you tell I like my food? )

We 'upgraded' our tent, though, in the new year sales and so I have been obsessing about upgrading our cooking options. Looking at these replies ^^^ I think I might stick to the ol' trusted lazy ways as it's making me tired just thinking about it!
